Marina’s P.O.V
I walked through the front entrance of the school and went to the secretary’s desk. She gave me my teachers list and a map of the school so that I could find my classes, along with a locker key. I said thanks and started walking to my first class, which was… Spanish. Shit. I was going to have to remember to tell my mum to talk to the principal about me taking Greek instead. I was fluent in Greek, my dad was Greek and had I lived in Greece for about 5 years. I felt really connected to the country.
When I arrived at my class, I checked the map just to make sure it was the right class. I didn’t want to look like an idiot on my first day, especially not in front of strangers! Yep, this was the right class. I took a deep breath and smiled before finally knocking on the door, I wanted to make a good first impression.
The door was opened by a man in his early 30’s, he seemed friendly as he welcomed me into his class. I looked around for a second to find an empty seat. I heard someone say “Woah” very softly. I wasn’t sure if it was a compliment or not, but it came from a girl in the front row. She kept on staring at me.
She was beautiful, I thought. She had long golden brown hair that covered her grey AC/DC shirt she was wearing, and her green eyes shone like emeralds. The rest of her outfit consisted of washed out Levi’s and really worn red chucks. There was an open seat next to her, so I figured I’d take it. I did my best to look confident as I walked to my new seat and sat down.
The teacher spoke and told us we had to do an unprepared oral on a classmate. I can’t even speak Spanish, let alone understand it! Well it’s only one lesson I thought, maybe I should at least try?
I took out my phone and went onto Google Translate. Just then the girl on my right spoke to me “Hola! Me llamo Elizabeth” I figured she was saying hi, so I quickly typed a response into my phone to translate it to Spanish. How the hell do I say this?? But I tried anyway. “Olah” shit it sounds bad. “May yamo Marina.” Did I even pronounce it right? I guess not because she started laughing at me! She found out that Spanish isn’t my thing, and told me that her name was Elizabeth.
I loved her from the moment we started talking. She was very mellow and had an overall calmness about her.
Leaning with her elbow on her desk , she rest her head in her hand. “Where are you from Marina?” she asked. ”I absolutely love your accent.” I crossed my legs and pulled my dress down a bit, as it was creeping up, before I replied. “Well I’m from Wales, but I’m actually half Welsh, half Greek. Dads Greek, mums Welsh.”
“That’s awesome.’ she replied. I realised my phone was still on Google Translate. I looked down at it and then put my phone off. “Ohhh, that’s why you took so long to reply!” she said. ‘So I’m assuming you’re not going to be taking Spanish then? What are you going to do instead?”
“Well I was hoping to just sit here in the class while I learn Greek instead. My mums coming to talk to the teacher tomorrow about it.”
Liz gave a small laugh. “That’s cool! You’re going to have to tell Mr.Alonso that you won’t be doing the oral today then.” I bent down to put my phone away in my bag. When I looked back up at her I caught her staring at my breasts
Elizabeth turned red and she looked down. I laughed. Did she think I was hot? Is that why she blushed?
She quickly spoke, probably trying to move on from the fact that I had made her blush. “Hey, do want to come sit with me at break?” I gave a small smile to let her know I wasn’t offended that she had stared. “Yeah I’d love to, thanks Liz.”
After the orals had been done, Elizabeth and I found out of our 6 classes, the only period we didn’t have together was math! I was really happy.
At break, we sat with her friends Charli, Calvin, and Ellie. They were really nice people, and Calvin was absolutely hilarious! I kept finding Elizabeth staring at me whenever I wasn’t looking, and then looking away when I did. It was so cute.
At the end of break, we said goodbye and went to the rest of our classes. Liz and I were with each other until last period, which was Math.
When school ended, Liz caught up with me again and asked for my number. I gave it to her and she gave me a big hug. Her hair smelled sweet like cinnamon. I held onto her for a while before I finally let go, and we went our separate ways.
