Hi again, so I'll be clarifying some things. Rene went missing a day before Jonathan and her birthday. Yes, people did know about her since Joyce put up the missing posters. But now, because of time passing, no one knows about Rene or know that she even existed. The students from Hawkins High School don't know a thing about Jonathan's life or the Byers family.
Which is why the whole Steve Harrington and Tommy H being total assholes to Jonathan.
