I grab my bags from the baggage claim and leave the airport. I stand under the pavilion, looking for Jack's cruiser. He's not here. I roll my eyes and retrieve my phone from my pocket. I quickly dial my moms number and place the phone to my ear. "Hello" Its my mom "Mom, he still isnt here" I say. She's quiet for a few minutes, then there's a males voice in the background "She just got to the airport" Who is she talking to? "Mom, who are you-" She cuts me off "Lil, Look, your dad should be there soon. I have company over. Shoot me a text when you make it to his house, okay?" I roll my eyes. "Thanks mom. I've been gone for maybe 5hrs and you already have one of your bang buddies over. I just now made it to the airport, I'm standing out here alone. And do you care? Of course not. Shows where I stand on your shit list. Thanks a whole lot mom" I say. She's quiet. "Lil, I dont wanna fight with you. Your dad should be there anytime now. Just wait out front for him" She says. I roll my eyes again and hang up.
I stand under the pavillion and look around. Forks airport is alot different than L.A's airport. Forks airport is more... quiet. I look back inside as two families come out of the terminals. They get their luggage from the baggage claim, and make their way outside. They stand beside me, then get into their cab. The cab pulls off, leaving me alone. I look back to the empty parking lot. The wind has started to pick up. I look up to the sky as it turns a dark gray color. Thats right, Forks is known for its rain. I watch as the raindrops come down, one by one. I put my hand out, palm facing up, and let the raindrops hit my palm. The way they fall so freely. With no one to catch them. Kind of how I am. Falling with no one to catch me. I turn my hand over and let the water slide out of my palm as I see Jack's cruiser pull up.
I climb into his car, and shut the door, the heat hitting my uncovered skin. I look forwards, as he pulls out of the airports parking lot. "Sorry I was late" He starts. "I got a call at the station. These's boys got into a fight at the local bar. They needed people to go and break up the fight". His radio calls for him to answer. He picks up the walkie talkie "This is Collins" He says. The radio starts up again "We need you to come down to La Push tonight. There's a Christmas party you need to attend. We are doing a head count" Its quiet again. He glances to me, then back to the radio "Marian, my daughter Lily just came into town. She's here for..." He stops. I look to him, as he looks away from me "Reasons I cant discuss. But, I dont think I can make it tonight" He turns a corner and continues down the road. The radio starts up again "Awwh to bad. Maybe next year" then its quiet again. He puts down the walkie talkie back on the holder, and continues driving.
We pull up to a red light, and he turns down the heat, slightly. "You didnt have to cancel the dinner" I start. He looks to me "Well I figured we could spend some time together. Ya know, catch up on-" I cut him off "All the years you neglected me as a father" I say, staring out the passanger side window. He doesnt finish, knowing im right. The light turns green and he lingers for abit, looking at me. I glance to him, then out the windshield "Its green" I say. He looks out the windshield and starts down the road again. "I have to get gas before we go home" He says. I dont say anything back, seeing as there's nothing I can do about it. I pull out my headphones and place a bud in each ear. I browse through my music, desiding on "Congratulations by Sleeping With Sirens". I press play and turn the music volume all the way up. I look back out the passanger side window as Jack pulls into the gas station.
He gets out of the car, closing the door slowly behind him. I watch as he makes his way inside the gas station. I stare at the doors, as a boy exits the store, followed by two others. They look to be my age. Maybe a year older. They are Native Americans. The one that steps out of the store first, turns and looks to me, quickly looking away, noticing me staring at him. I look to my phone, slightly smiling. I look back up as he looks away, and climbs into a burnt orange truck along with the others. I watch as they back out of their parking spot and leave the lot. Jack walks out of the store, and comes over to his side of the car, and starts pumping the gas. The song finishes and Jack climbs back into the car. I look to him and take in his features. His dark hair is gelled up and looks professional. He's wearing his uniform. He has a mustache. His dark eyes have dark circles around them. Obviously from lack of sleep. Other than that, he looks the same as he did when I was a kid. He glances out of the corner of his eye, and I look away, rather quickly. My cheeks slowly begin to heat up.
"So, I've already told your mom this, but" he takes a sip of his drink, then finishes "But I have a surprise for you. You'll get it tomorrow. After we take you to register for your Sophmore year. Well so you can finish your Sophmore year of school" he says. I look to him again, taking out my headphones and placing them in my cross body bag. "Surprise?" I ask, looking to him. He doesnt answer, then I look out the window again. "I dont do good with surprises. Mom should of told you that". He chuckles "Hard headed. Just like your mother" He says. I roll my eyes, holding back my smile. He continues making small talk as we continue down the road, heading to my new home for the next two years.
