“Excuse me?” she asked, fearing that she’d heard him wrong. He cleared his throat. “All your tests came out normal. No STD’s or irregularities, except that when we did your routine urine test and Pap smear we discovered high levels of the hormone HCG in your urine and I also checked your cervix. It's closed.” He glanced at the chart again. “You said you were last active in February, but from the results of your exam you’re about ten weeks along.” He closed the chart and glanced at her. Layla was stunned silent. She sat there for several minutes staring at him. “Are you ok Ms. Sinclair?” he asked concerned. She blinked rapidly, refocusing and shook her head. “Wh- Ah… How is this possible? I’ve been taking my pills everyday and I haven’t had any, no symptoms at all. I mean none. I just don’t understand!” She was genuinely confused. They had always been careful, and the times they weren’t, which were slim, wasn’t a problem because she had taken her pill already. She was still taking her pill! “Well, as you know there is only a 98.9 percent effective rate on the pill but the only other option is that you possibly skipped more than one dose and during that time your body ovulated and you became pregnant during one of your… encounters. You’ve started back on the pill regularly and that’s why you haven’t experienced any symptoms. Now I’d advise that you discontinue taking them immediately.” Layla couldn’t believe it. They were careful! She was positive. “How… How far along am I?” she asked. He skimmed the chart.“Nine weeks and four days. Your suspected date of conception around December 20th” he said to be exact. She quickly calculated in her head. Shit! The night of Naomi’s wedding! She rubbed her forehead and blew out a breath. “I uh... I may have missed a few doses here and there. My best friend was getting married and I was the maid of honor. Needless to say I was stressed.” She explained. He nodded sympathetically. “So you were under a great deal of stress and that was probably why you forgot to take your pill on several occasions. Unfortunately you happened to of had sexual intercourse when your body released an egg.” He explained sympathetically. She nodded woefully. “It’s not uncommon” he tried soothing her. She sat quietly for a few minutes. “So what’s next?” she looked to him desperately. “Well you should stop taking your pills immediately. And I want to see you again in one week. We’ll schedule an ultrasound to check the development of the fetus and I’m going to start you on prenatal vitamins today. Now you may start to experience symptoms over the next couple of months.” He paused. “I know you’ve suffered a miscarriage in the past so I advise you to take extra precaution. At least until we know if this pregnancy is going to be high risk.” She nodded slowly as fear began to creep in. “Overall you are healthy, physically and mentally. I know this is a bombshell out of nowhere and if you need information on other opti-“No.” she said point blank. She took a deep breath. “I admit this was unexpected... but I will not terminate this pregnancy or seek other options.” She said with finality. He smiled. “OK. Now here are some pamphlets and sample packets.” he pulled a bag from his desk and handed it to her. “If you have any questions or concerns please contact me or one of the nurses. Congratulations mommy” he stood up and offered her his hand. She stood on wobbly legs and shook it. She smiled. “Thank you, Doctor James.” She turned and glanced at the photo wall and finally allowed herself to look.
