"Have a great day at school"
"Yeah right" I muttered under my breath as I unbuckled my seat belt and reached for the door handle
"I know it's going to be hard Maddy, but I'm sure you'll make new friends"
I rolled my eyes and got out of the car. I retrieved my backpack from the back seat, with little pestering from my brother, and closed the door. I looked back as my mother sped away from the curb and sighed. I didn't want to move to Cincinnati, but my dad made us. He was in charge and you never question him. I placed the straps over my shoulders and walked towards the administration building to get my schedule. I was a little early and there were groups of students hanging around waiting for the first bell. I had to stick out as the obvious "new girl" and even more so coming from California. But I suddenly realized that no one gave a shit about me being there so I continued on to the office. I walked inside and over to the front counter. I was greeted by a student aid. And by greeted I mean rudely sneered at by a girl in a cheerleader uniform. Well, at least I know the cheerleaders are bitches here too.
"New?"
I shyly nodded "Yeah. Just moved...."
"That's nice. They're all taking important calls. You'll just have to wait"
She pointed to a line of chairs along the wall. I turned around and sat down and patiently waited for my turn. I watched as other students came in and out and walked by the giant windows in the front.
"Madison Connors?"
I stood up and went up to the front desk. A thin women with dark hair and glasses set down a small file folder and opened it up. She handed me my schedule, my locker combination and a school map. She pointed to where all of my classes were located and sent me on my way. I wandered the halls and found my locker. I tried the combination several times before it finally opened. I looked around and watched as groups of students made their way through the halls. I was nervous. I had never been "the new girl" before. If my dad hadn't been so stupid we'd still be living in California. I shoved a few things in the locker and headed towards my first class. While walking the hall I came across the bathroom as the bell rang. I stepped inside and nervously stared at myself in the mirror. I pulled a small pouch from my backpack and applied a little more powder to my face. The smallish scar on my chin was barely noticeable, but I stared at it and sighed anyway. There was nothing too special about me. My green eyes were practically brown and didn't sparkle or dance when I laughed or smiled. My long light brown hair was straight and fell just below my shoulders and it never held a curl. I was short...all of 5'4" and I hated it. I straightened and smoothed out my shirt before heading out to find my first class. I was late, but I was hoping for a little understanding since it was my first day.
"102A....102A....AH here it is" I politely opened the door and jumped as it practically slammed shut behind me. I quickly darted my eyes across the room, but no one even noticed except for the teacher. I shyly walked over as he took my schedule from my hands and wrote something down in a spiral book.
"Welcome to English 11 Miss Connors. There's an open seat in the back."
I took back my schedule and turned to walk towards the back
"Oh and Miss Connors..." I turned and looked back "don't be late to my class tomorrow"
I half smiled and gave a polite nod as I turned and headed towards the only empty seat in the back. I set my stuff down and looked around. The boy sitting next to me caught my eye, but only because he was doodling
"Is it OK that I sit here?"
Jon's POV
I looked over and just kind of stared. I couldn't help it. I wanted to smile at her, but I didn't want to freak her out either. I shrugged my shoulders and went back to doodling in my notebook, but watching her out of the corner of my eye. She half smiled, sighed and sadly looked down at her desk and picked at the nail polish on her fingers. I wanted to say something. I felt bad. I had obviously hurt her feelings and I didn't mean to. The bell rang and she quickly picked up her stuff and headed out of the door. I sighed and headed to my next class. I couldn't stop thinking about her. I hadn't even talked to her and she was already on my mind.
After 4th period I made my way to my locker and started unloading my books before heading to lunch. I barely made it out of the way as the door slammed closed
"Seen the new girl?"
"Fuck! Don't do that shit. Yeah I sit next to her in 1st period...why?"
"What do you think?"
"Why do you care?"
"She's cute. Introduce us."
"Huh? I haven't even talked to her. Do it yourself"
"Awww come on..."
"Come on what? I haven't said a word to her. I'm hungry lets go to lunch."
We walked to the cafeteria and I sat down with my pizza and listened to my friend go on and on and about the new girl. I looked up and watched her exit the lunch line carrying a bag of chips, water and an apple. She paused for a second and looked around before going to the farthest corner away from everyone and sat alone at a table that I didn't even know people actually used. I'd never seen anyone sit there anyway. My friends were talking about some party they wanted to have on Friday night after our wrestling competition was over, but I was tuning them out. I kept looking up every so often and watching her
"Dude...please go over and talk to her for me"
"Why can't you do it?"
"Because"
I sighed in annoyance, grabbed my bottle of Pepsi, pulled up a chair and sat down. She blankly stared at me while eating her Doritos like she was completely confused as to why I would be sitting next to her.
"HI"
"Uh...hi"
"We sit next to each other in English. Sorry about earlier. I didn't mean to ignore you. Ooo Doritos....thanks"
I reached into her bag and took a chip as she snatched it away like I was about to contaminate the entire bag.
"I'm Jon. What's your name?"
"Madison"
"Hi Madison. My friend over there likes you..."
I motioned with my head and she looked up as I looked back. He gave a little wave and she blushed slightly
"....but he's a douche bag. SO where are you from?"
"California"
"Cool. I'm from here." She laughed a little which made me smile "Is it nice there?"
Shrugging "I dunno. I guess. It's warmer that's for sure."
I chuckled a little which made her smile. She was cute and her green eyes were really pretty. We sat and talked until the bell rang to go to class. She shyly smiled as she grabbed her backpack and said goodbye. I walked back to my friends table and grabbed my stuff
"What the fuck man? You were supposed to talk to her for me"
I shrugged "She didn't want to talk to you"
"Why not?"
"You made me do it"
