I opened the door to my apartment and threw the keys on the nearby counter. I looked around and didn't see Julia so I flopped on the couch and pulled out my phone. I scrolled through photos of Julia and I together. I smiled and chuckled at some of them. With Maddy around it was harder for me to remember how happy I actually am with Julia. I was starting to realize that maybe asking Maddy out here was a mistake. I thought I was over her. We hadn't seen each other in so long and we'd barely talked, but now that she's here....I'm still in love with her.
"Jon?"
I was lost in thought and staring at my phone
"JON?"
I jumped up and dropped my phone on the floor
"What? Hey baby....what do you need?"
"Do I look OK?"
She stood in the hallway wearing a light purple dress top and skinny jeans with black heels. Her medium length hair was slightly curled and she had done her make up. To me she was cute. But ever since Maddy got here she's been really insecure. I don't know if she picks up a vibe from me or from Maddy or both, but she's constantly looking for me to tell her she looks alright.
"Spin around" I smirked
She slowly spun in a circle as I stood up and walked towards her. I took her hand and spun her around again. She grinned at me waiting for an answer to her question. I made a face at her and her smile dropped
"You really gonna wear that?"
Her eyes became wide and she looked like she was about to cry. You could tell she was trying to figure out exactly what was wrong with her outfit.
"I....I.....I mean....I guess I could go change. I....I just thought it was going to be casual so...I want to impress your friend and..."
"Jules! I'm kidding. You look amazing as always. You don't need to impress Maddy or me. You're beautiful the way you are and I love you."
My phone rang in my back pocket. I pulled it out and saw Maddy was calling me. I grinned and quickly turned away from Julia to answer it. I laughed and smiled during the conversation and I turned around to see Julia glaring at me and tapping her perfectly manicured nails on the counter. I hung up the phone and went over and kissed her softly and lifted her up smiling at her. I had to do what I could to smooth it over so she wouldn't be upset or jealous. I took her hand and led her out of the door to the car.
"Jon?"
"Yeah?"
"You still want to get married right?"
"Yes, Julia I do. Why would you even ask that question?" I snapped back with a sigh
"Well, because you're different with Madison here. You're...distant around me. The way you smiled and turned away instantly when you saw her calling. You never used to do that before."
"You worry too much. Everything is fine. I just haven't seen or talked to Maddy in a long time. She's been my best friend for years and I missed her. I'm all about you Julia. I love you. I'm marrying you."
"Did you two ever date?"
I hesitated and then smiled "No, Jules. We didn't. We've always just been close friends."
She seemed satisfied with that answer and got in the car. I let out a huge sigh of relief before getting in the drivers seat and driving to the restaurant Madison picked for dinner. I lied straight to her face. It was a horrible thing to do to someone that I was about to marry, but she was already doubting everything else. I didn't need her doubting more. The car ride to the restaurant was mostly silent. I held her hand and softly kissed it garnering a smile from her. I loved her smile. I started thinking about various things about my life and the way it was going. My career was taking off and I couldn't be happier in that area. I thought I had my love life under control and in a way I do, but Madison was my problem. She knows me better than anyone. Just like I know her. We were always a couple that was meant to be. If I wasn't such a dumbass fool we would be. But she's moved on. I moved on. Somewhere deep inside of her she still loves me. I can tell. I still love her too...I think. But I was completely in love with Julia. I pulled up to the restaurant and opened Julia's door and helped out of the car. I looked at the sign, smirked and sighed. Madison picked this place on purpose and she'll deny it and lie to make it look like she had no idea. I saw her in the distance walking up towards us. She looked amazing as always. She always wore something that brought out her green eyes.
