"So you haven't even thought about it?"."Noooo. God, no. Please let's just talk about something else than him"
I answered back. She looked at me with skeptical eyes for what felt like ages until her eyes were back on the road. She didn't break me because that was the truth. I almost thought she was done looking for something between me and Marcus my friend who is also my neighbor or was my neighbor. Guess a fling had occurred between us before me and Violette left New York but i never thought any of it until we, kinda, well we kissed goodbye. I don't even understand it, but not any feelings for him like that. Besides this was about our youth and wild choices being 21 years old and pursuing our dream.
Violette couldn't even start an argue with me again because her phone rang and broke the comfortable silence. Violette barely had her hands on the wheel while she was trying to put the phone to her ears, which made me take over the wheel for a while. I looked back at Shaely laying in the backseats trying to survive the heat, even with a thick coat of fur covering her body. My dog clearly needed water or a snack. I trusted Violette for a while when i went to look after some dogsnacks until my head jerked against my will and i noticed how Violette weren't looking at the road anymore.
"Jesus Violette, you wanna switch seats so you can talk to your little boyfriend or you wanna kill us while talking to him?". She just looked at me with angry eyes and then rolled her eyes.
"No, I know babe. But it's gonna be okay, alright. Just wait and.."
"Violette, stop. We need to take a break, so you can talk to your boyfriend, this isn't working.". She turned to the side of the road, stopped, and got out.
"No that was just Julia, babe. But seriously I miss you tooooo boo, i kinda wanna go back to last night and....".
I almost puked at that, but chose just to grab the keys and get out of the car instead, I guess we both needed a break from driving. The road were burning my feet even though I had shoes on and the only other thing around us was some cactuses and a small, lifeless house not far away from the road.
Violette was my best friend since beginning of high school and I guess we always would stick together, even in the hardest situations. I think we've saved each other from many dark times, but right now we were approaching our dreams of staying in LA and pursuing our dreams, witch sounded surreal, but the fact is that we both got an opportunity not long ago.
Violette's blond hair was all I could see, before I started to drift of while leaning up against the red Mazda. As far as I remember we were still in New Mexico, and still like 10 hours until we were in Los Angeles. But right now we were in no man's land, in something looking like a dessert with dead and dryed out plants. The ground was hard but only because it was so dry. The air was completely still and the sun was right above us, just burning away our happiness. Sorry, that was a little too pessimistic. I guess was a little homesick, i mean New York is also nothing like this airless desert. I Started walking away from the car and Violette, just to give a little life to my lifeless legs.
Shaely stayed in the car, even if she wanted to follow me she didn't have the energy at all. I didn't even notice how far away I was but then I saw a small pile of something in the distance. I began walking faster to see what it was, hopefully Violette would be fine with her boyfriend on the phone. I was kinda scared if I was gonna see a dead animal but it was just a pile of trash and then a couple of desert foxes. Shaely being a border Collie and a very observant dog had already noticed them but let them be by know. Fuck, it was hot. It was weird though. The heat was unbearable but now there was also a smell, and not just from the trash laying in front of me. I turned to my side to see another pile of junk, but this time something weird about it made me not walk towards it. It was far away hidden behind a bush, so you wouldn't be able to see it from the road. Then I remembered the house we saw, behind me on the other side of the road. It was too far away to see it clearly but then again there was probably nothing to see. Nobody lived there, right? The smell was now more prominent, and I saw Violette and Shaely noticed it too. Violette was smelling herself and the car but I knew it was something else out here that was the source to this smell. Thats when Shaely got up. I could see how she was looking for something, and how her nose and all the muscels around were working on that task. I hurried back to the car but noticed something in the distance from the house. I yelled at Violette who was just texting now, and not talking. "You smell that too?" was all I had to ask. "yeah, like something rotten and dead. You swear you didn't kill Marcus and put him in the trunk?" she was smiling at me, trying to get one out of me as well. "if I would kill, it would be your inappropriate sense of humor, perhaps you can find it in the trunk." I smiled back and pointed at the trunk. "Funny, Julia. Funny". "just get in and look at maps, we need gas for the car and ourselves so look for a station and perhaps a drive thru or something.". She jumped in shotgun and opened google maps, while I was looking at the house in the distance. It was weird for sure.
"Just wait here, okay?".I threw the keys in the car and walked towards the small tree house.
"Jule please don't. I just wanna drive, please?" Violette sounded oddly nervous when she said so I chose not to do more then look another time.
"It's weird though. Who would wanna live out here." I looked at Violette who clearly didn't like this situation "
"I don't care, lets just drive, get something to eat and get to our new apartment in LA. Got it?". I looked at her in the eyes before getting the keys from the seat and settled before starting the car.
"I'm just saying, be happy I'm driving, cause I have no car-crash boyfriend calling for the next hours, so if you just tell me where to go and turn up the music, we'll be in LA in a few hours. Got it?". She laughed with me this time and turned on the music that was connected with her phone. "Got it.".
While she was looking for song i looked back at the house one last time, and i swear i saw a shadow moving on the terrace and then i saw it. A tall man was carrying big black sacks of what looked like junk. But they were too heavy to just be ordinary junk and he was strong enough to carry that without any trouble. He saw me looking, and so i pressed down harder on the speeder and hoped to think of something else rather than what i just saw. I was probably seeing visions, i hadn't eaten or been drinking for too long it was getting to my head. Not even Shaely noticed anything, she was just barely surviving the heat.
