Nineteen:
{Lockdown Day 2}
The excitement of the night before had left everyone exhausted. Whoever planned a wedding on such short notice…what were they thinking?
Diya rolled over in bed to find that Mikaeel was not there so she slipped out herself and realized that it was time for Fajr salaah.
“Where did the time fly too?” she spoke to herself and nearly jump out of her skin when Mikaeel replied from somewhere in the room. Because it was dark, she couldn’t really spot him, but then the light came on and there he was, looking fresh and ready to face the day.
“OMA, you scared me.” Diya put her hand to her chest.
Mikaeel smiled lazily at her as he unfolded his musallah and placed it on the ground.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t want to disturb you while I readied the musallahs for us but I guess you got disturbed anyway.”
Diya so wanted to hug him but held back… She knew that he still wasn’t the type to just hug and now with the virus making people stay away from each other, she felt like the distance was going to make him more resistant to her. The thought irked her, but she knew how to be patient at the best of times.
“A dollar for your thoughts…” he whispered from right beside her, which made the fine hair on her neck stand.
“This virus… when do you think it will end?” She asked without looking up at him.
Mikaeel couldn’t answer her question because he himself didn’t know where they stood with the deadly virus.
“I guess we have to just wait and see because it’s just the beginning. But, on the bright side… We have Gafoor and Radiya staying with us during this lockdown period and so we will be occupied with them and the endless moans and groans of Yaseera. We’re going to get through this together.” Mikaeel tried to sound enthusiastic and it worked.
Diya sighed in relief and thanked him for always saying the right things at the right time.
The second day of lockdown turned out to be more exciting than even a normal day in their house. The excitement of the simple and hasty nikah of the day before was still priority and the air was still filled with the aroma of savories.
“We still have so much of food from last night, why don’t we call our neighbors over for lunch?” Mikaeel’s mother voiced her thoughts.
Mikaeel lifted his head up from the magazine he was reading but he didn’t comment. Diya, who was sipping her cappuccino felt the need to say something, agreed with her mother-in-law. Mikaeel’s gaze swept over her but still he remained silent.
At lunch, conversation flowed from the virus to the nikah and back to the lockdown but at tea time, things got more comfortable and talks about work came about.
“What do you do?” Gafoor asked Aadil, and was surprised to learn that he owned a well-known company.
“Diya, here’s your chance, give him your CV and maybe after all of this uncertainty, you will land a job.” Mikaeel’s father said.
Diya, at once forgot about her anxiety of the virus and began talking to Aadil about her qualifications and all else that Aadil was asking her.
“I would be only too happy to have you as my P.A if you’re interested and when I say that, I mean it. The job is yours if you want it.” Aadil smiled.
Everybody around the dining room table was excited and telling her to go for it and that there was nothing holding her back.
“Imagine your boss living right next door to you? No calling in sick with lame excuses…He will be knocking at your door.” Radiya laughed at her own words.
Diya was so caught up with the joy of finding a job in all of this confusion that she agreed to take the job without waiting to talk it over with her husband and it worried him to no end.
“Well then, that’s settled. I have my job sorted and so do you. Congratulations on your new job.” Aadil went very business-like, making Diya confident that she had taken the right decision.
But… What about Mikaeel? He was quiet. Would he be happy?
That was left to be seen.
