Diya sat amidst her excited family and friends while they waited for the arrival of the groom and his family. Her own excitement was dimmed when the realization hit her, that this was her last moments in her parent's home as a single woman, even though she knew that nikah was already done and that she was already considered 'married'.
"They're here! The cars are all pulling in!" the roar of a family member brought Diya jumping to her feet. This is it, she thought nervously as she straightened her simple yet elegant wedding gown.
"Oh my goodness! You didn't say that he was thatttt gorgeous!" a cousin shrieked.
"He seems very reserved and arrogant!" another cousin whispered so that her voice could not be heard outside the room.
"Arrogant or not, good looking is the most important thing." the former cousin argued.
Diya listened in on the conversation and shook her head. They both must have seen the best man or another guy from Mikaeel's family because he was definitely not what they were arguing about. Neither was he as good looking as they claimed, nor was he arrogant looking...he was just an ordinary boy that had very good features, that's as far as she could recall from the day they had met.
Arrogant looking? She frowned. That struck a cord, but nah he was just on the quiet side, she calmed herself. Just as she took a slightly wobbly breath in, her mother's smiling, teary face appeared...
"My dear, it's time to give your hand to the man that should mean the world to you. No matter what people would say or how they may try to advise you otherwise, always remember that your husband is the most important person to you now after Allah and His Rasool (S.A.W). Are you ready to meet him? Nervous? Aah... I can remember the time your father met me for the first time after our nikah. I was scared stiff, I wondered if I made a mistake, I wondered if he was regretting his decision to marry me... But 45 years later, Alhumdulillah, we're still going strong and I make duaa that your marriage be filled with only happiness, endless amount of love and smiles, Aameen."
Diya silently said 'Aameen' before embracing her mother with tears in her eyes.
"I love you Mum, always and forever."
"I love you too."
The softly spoken words were blocked out because of the commotion at the room door...
When mother and daughter turned toward it, a silence fell around them because Mikaeel came into view and the others were ushered away by an Aunty, who could be heard reprimanding them in a hushed tone.
"Uh, come in..." Diya's mother smiled nervously, and was filled with relief when she saw Mikaeel's mother just behind him.
Leaving the other woman to ease the silence between bride and groom, she stepped aside and watched as her daughter blushed when her gaze met her husbands.
Diya held her hand out in greeting but was surprised when Mikaeel simply nodded and shoved his hands deeper in his pocket.
"Oh my Mikaeel is so shy, he will get used to the idea of having a wife by his side in no time." Mikaeel's mother sounded apologetic before she smiled brightly at the only other woman in the room.
"Shall we leave them to bond for awhile and then they can join us for tea?"
Diya's mother was only too ready to leave the room so she hastily agreed and they left. Silence greeted the newly wedded couple, but not for long.
Diya smiled up at her non-smiling husband, trying to make him comfortable with small talk about how quick things had moved forward, but Mikaeel remained silent... There was nothing he wanted to add on.
"Oh and here... this is for you." She picked up a watch box from the bed, removed the watch from the cushioning and held it out to him.
Mikaeel stared at it for a moment or two before realizing that he had her ring in his coat pocket.
"Oh, I almost forgot, this is for you..." he said distractedly as held out the box to her without revealing the ring.
"Won't you atleast slip the ring onto my finger?" Diya asked, her smile slowly fading.
"Uh, um... Okay..." he fumbled with the cover and pulled out a beautiful ring before motioning for her to hold her hand out. Without a word and without touching her, he slipped it onto her finger and held his hand out for her to put on his watch.
"That was easy, wasn't it?" Diya mumbled under her breath.
"Not really, but... Don't you think we should join the rest?"
The change of topic was deliberately done but Diya brushed it away."That's a good idea." she forced out a smile as she draped her Abaya around her and tied her niqaab in place.
Mikaeel watched as she pulled open the door and motioned for him to walk ahead of her.
Awkward. Very awkward.
