Twenty:{Lockdown Night 2 – Day 3}
“So, you’re officially employed?” Mikaeel spoke in the stillness of the night when Diya got comfortable beside him.
“Hmm, can you believe my good fortune? Who would’ve thought that I would find a job in the midst of all this drama? And Aadil seems like a good guy, he is very business minded and if he thinks I can be an asset to his business then I’m sure I will be…” Diya sighed in content.
“Good guy huh?” Mikaeel said in a tone unfamiliar to Diya. Was it jealousy? Nah couldn’t be, she thought. But ohh it so was, if only she knew. The burn in his chest was not something gaviscon could get rid of.
“Is that all you heard me say?” Diya rolled over so that she was looking at his impassive looking face.
“No, but…Are you sure you want to work for him as a P.A?” Mikaeel looked anywhere but at her when he spoke.
Diya told him that she was pretty confident that it was exactly what she was looking for.
“…Besides, you were right, if you and I worked side by side we might be in conflict time and again, so I’d rather work for another.” She completed.
Mikaeel wished he could change his words right that moment but he didn’t want to sound too desperate. So he played it calm even though he was on edge.
“I can organize something at the office where we don’t need to be in each other’s way all the time?” He sounded hopeful but Diya wasn’t catching on because her dreams were finally a reality and nothing was going to change her mind.
“Hmm, that would’ve been perfect, but look, with all that’s going on around us, I’m sure that you have enough to worry about. So don’t stress, I will be fine with the job at hand.” She closed her eyes and fell off into a sleep full of dreams. Dreams about her job and the fun she was going to have making appointments and filing documents.
Mikaeel had trouble falling asleep that night, his mind all over the place. Looking over at the peaceful and angelic face of his wife, he wondered if she would be disappointed if he stopped her from working with the other man.
By the morning though, his outlook changed because he realized that his wife would think he is hindering her growth in the business field so he remained silent on the topic.
The morning passed by just lazing around and enjoying the calmness that filled the air. There were no cars on the road, no taxis hooting away and no sign of life outside of the house. Everybody had slept in so Diya moved freely without her niqaab while she did the little things she had come to love. Watering the plants, filling up the bird’s water and of course feeding and playing with her pet cat.
“This place is really something else, isn’t it?” Mikaeel joined her with two glasses of hot lemon and honey water mixed with the little black seeds (kulunji).
“Hmm, I was just thinking how different it has become since the lockdown. It’s so calm and peaceful.” Diya took the glass that he held out and sipped on their every morning drink.
“This is really something we should’ve been having all of our lives, but here we are drinking it only when we need the benefit of it.” Diya went on and Mikaeel agreed with her.
“This lockdown is something else, so many things happened in such a short while… Now about the rest of our days… How are we going to spend it?” He looked at her questioningly.
Diya shrugged because she didn’t know how they were going to fill their days together but she knew that she was going to try and complete her Quraan before the month of Ramadaan dawned upon them.
“I think I will just do more work remotely because I don’t want to lag behind. And obviously my Quraan recitation too.” Mikaeel looked in the distance as he spoke and Diya wondered if he even worried about what they would do together as a couple but she didn’t ask.
The afternoon was spent with Ramadaan preps, cooking the mince for samoosa and pies and then later on filling the pastry and pur.
With that out of the way because of the many hands that got together, there were talks of doing other Ramadaan preps as the days went by.
Mikaeel didn’t see his wife until the time of Asr salaah set in because he was busy setting up his office at home.
“I have everything sorted and now I can conduct my meetings from right here. I already got the guys connected so now we will be able to communicate and get things moving forward instead of losing out on work.” He explained to Diya when she questioned where he had disappeared to.
“That’s great news…But I hope everything just sorts itself out so that we can go back to normal.” Diya sighed.
Mikaeel knew exactly what his wife meant because he too was feeling the strain of the lockdown now, what without driving at all and not meeting the outside world… it was getting a bit frustrating if one could describe it as that.
“I know it will all pass in due time though because Allah knows why He got us in this position in the first place and He will surely show us the way out in-sha-Allah.” She completed.
Mikaeel knew that she was right and whispered an ‘Aameen’.
