Diya was dressed in less than 15 minutes for her Walimah function, impressing her husband furthermore. He liked punctuality and he didn't like time-wasters.
"Maybe you could teach Yaseera how to dress so beautifully in such a short time, she takes ages with only her makeup..." Mikaeel smiled.
Diya walked over to him and without his permission, pulled his tie into a neater knot at his neck before glancing up at him.
"Was that a compliment?" she asked almost shyly but not quite.
Mikaeel raised an eyebrow, he didn't compliment the women in his life, they usually complimented him.
"Maybe...I'm not sure." he replied uncertainly.
"Hmph! Maybe, I'm not sure..." she mimicked him and he burst out laughing.
"Um, do I look okay for, uh, the occasion?" Mikaeel had no idea why he was fishing for a compliment from her but he sure wanted her approval for some unknown reason.
"Uh... You look...okay." she rolled her eyes before turning away from him with a 'take that' kinda shrug.
Mikaeel knew he deserved that. Nice?! He shook his head as he took one last glance in the mirror. He looked more than nice, he thought to himself.
"Hey..." he called out, and stopped walking towards the room door.
"Jee...?" Diya swung around.
"Come here... Tell me what you want different?" Mikaeel held his hand out to her and Diya didn't hesitate in placing her tinier ones in them.
"Different? I don't want anything different. Everything is perfect. Why? What do you feel needs to be different?" her eyes were sparkling when she lifted her face up to his.
Mikaeel thought for a moment before telling her Gafoor's behavior at the musjid after Fajr salaah and then the spark of jealousy he felt when his friend was helping her choose out jewellery for her outfit.
"I don't know anything about romance, I don't have a romantic bone in my body. Maybe I would like to learn how to make you happy... Think you could you teach me a thing or two?" his voice deepened just the slightest, making Diya's toes curl in her sandal.
"Oh my Allah, I... I don't even know what to say to that. Firstly, you always take me by surprise with these cute moments, secondly, you blow me out of my mind when you get all sentimental. What you're doing right now is a start to what makes me happy... This side of you that you hide or are afraid to show is what makes a difference. The romantic streak inside of you will show itself, there's no need for me to teach it to you." Diya linked their fingers together before going on...
"I know you have this air about yourself, where you feel like you're untouchable and that you have it all together... But..." she trailed off.
"Bu... But?" Mikaeel unlinked their fingers to let his arm snake around her waist and he lifted her off her feet so that their eyes were on the same level.
"But... I know that deep down you yearn to be loved and cared for just as I yearn to have that kind of relationship with you." Diya blinked once, twice and was not at all surprised when her husband leaned in closer and took her breath away.
Mikaeel forgot his reservation and just enjoyed the moment of total bliss. Time ticked on but the couple didn't rush to the function awaiting them... They knew they found something special and they didn't want to rush the moment.
"No romantic bone in your body huh? What was that?" Diya asked a while later, still in the circle of her husband's arms.
"You. It's you. There's something about you..." he whispered.
And that was all Diya needed to hear. She knew that if she had that kind of effect on him then there was a chance that they could make something of their marriage.
