A day went by. Hiccup has thankfully let Jack's little visit pass by quicker than usual. I'm glad he did. Stress is the last thing he needs. It was Raining, and snow had started to fall, despite it being the beginning of November. I was in the kitchen making some snacks, while Hiccup put the baby to bed.
Two reasons. 1. He needed to clear his mind. And 2. Asher never fusses when Hiccup put's him down for a nap.
Hiccup's good with him. He always has. I see Toothless sleeping on a rug in the kitchen. I wanted to give him a treat when I remembered what Hiccup said. He explained how he just took the dog to the vets this morning, and Toothless was sore from needles and examinations.
I decide to leave him be when I hear the front door open. Hiccup's father is home. I leave what I'm doing, then go out to the hall. His father did even say anything when Hiccup himself came down the stairs.
He looked to his dad, then sighed. "That's it, I'm going back upstairs." He muttered, before turning.
"Hiccup, I need to talk to you." His father told him crossly going to him, gently pulling him back down.
Hiccup sighed. "You always say that then you end up asking how I feel, and for the last time, I am fine." Hiccup started madly.
"That's not what I want to talk about," his father said.
"Then What?"
"I have something for you," his father started proudly, and a bit loud.
Hiccup and I both shush him, without even realizing it. "Keep it down a little, I just put the baby down." Hiccup snapped quietly.
Stoick took a deep breath then led Hiccup to the parlor slowly. I follow, not sure of what's going to happen. "Have you seen the old radio tower downtown?" Stoick asked Hiccup.
He looked to me briefly then back to his dad. "Uhm. Yeah."
"That place was your Mothers. She used to lite up the town with that Radio Show." His father told him.
Hiccup didn't reply for a moment. "How's this--" he started but got cut off.
"She used to do an annual Christmas show. Made everyone in this town happy..." his Father started again. "Even Ol' Mildew, who lives down the street."
Hiccup shivered at the name. "I hate that guy. He's hated me since Toothless destroyed his yard."
"Hiccup," his Father stopped him. He looked up. "I know how much you long to know your mother. I wish you knew her too, but this will be something of her, you'll never forget," he told him, giving him a small gold key.
Hiccup took it, looking at it. "What's this?"
"It's the key to the Radio Tower." Hiccup froze for a moment. "It was your Mother's pride and joy, Hiccup. She wanted you to take over for you when you were 16, I just didn't know if you were ready." His Father explained. "I know how scared you are to forget her, especially since you were only little, you probably don't have a lot of memory of her, so I thought this would keep your memory of her."
Hiccup looked at the key closer. "Why does it have my name on it?"
"She had that engraved after you were born. She wanted to leave something special for you. She knew you'd be the strongest of us all. You'd be the one to carry on the Family Tradition."
Hiccup didn't reply. I look at him. He looked almost heartbroken. Hiccup and I have the same problem. We both lost our Mothers.
But in a way, we were different. I knew my mother before she died. Hiccup, never knew his. He'll never know what she was like. Hiccup looked at the key for the longest time. He took a deep but shaky breath, then looked up. "I-I was so young, when Mom -- you know -- passed, I was always so scared I'd forget about her."
"I know son, I know. But you will never forget her." His father started.
Hiccup looked up. "What makes you say that?"
"She lives in you, Hiccup." He started. "You are her son. I always see her, when I look at you."
Hiccup only looked at him, with a look that resembled his fathers so much.
"Is that why...." He started but trailed off. Hiccup slowly shook his head. "Never-mind."
I watched his father out his hand to his son's shoulder. "Your mother, she'd be every bit as proud as I am." He said. Hiccup looked up slowly. I stood silently, trying not to cry. This one probably the two attempted to bond with each other.
Who knows they'd talk about something they had in common? They both missed her, but the only one didn't know her. Hiccup looked to his dad once more, before taking a deep shaky breath. "Thanks, dad.."
