"Waxer, tell me, who gave you the orders to attack us?"
"It was General Krell, he sent us to these coordinates to stop the enemy... but it was you."
The life in the soldiers face flickered out with his final breath. A single tear slipped from his brown eye, demonstrating the great sadness that plagued the hearts of everyone on the battlefield.
Rex's jaw locked at Waxer's last words. He glared at the forested distance, angry. Jedi General Pong Krell had betrayed them, and had set up this false mission to make them kill themselves.
Rex rose, stepping away from his brother's dead body. Dakota was no longer there, as she had been a moment ago. His brown eyes spotted her lightsaber which laid alone in the grass where she once stood. He bent down to pick it up.
Kix glanced up to the Captain from where he was working on the ground. "Waxer... wasn't killed by a blaster"
Rex processed what he said, then glanced back down to the saber in his hand. Her necklace was wrapped securely around the handle as it always was. His heart shattered like glass. It broke for the death of his brother, and also because he knew all too well whose hand his blood was on.
"I'll be back, gather everyone who's left." he ordered Kix.
"Yes sir."
Rex walked away from Waxer and pushed his way through the foggy brush, not knowing exactly where she could have gone to. The saber was gripped tightly in his hand with the necklace weaved between his fingers.
After a short while of searching, he found her standing alone in a small clearing, far away from everyone else. She stood near a natural overlook of the planet's landscape. He called out to her, quickening his pace.
"I'm not a m—" Her voice faded into the croaking and creaking of the boggy woodlands around them.
"What?" He finally reached her side, moving to take her arm. "Hey."
"That was me," she blurted immediately, whipping to face him. He lifted his hands, caught between embracing her in her clearly frantic state and holding her at bay. Blood stained her cheek, and his chest constricted at the momentary thought of it being hers.
"I did that, I—" she dragged her hand down her face, squeezing her eyes shut. "I'm not a monster, I promise." Her voice sounded so, so small. Panicked and spooked like she saw a ghost. As if she were convinced that she was the ghost. "You have to believe me, Rex."
