Mates are confusing.

I slowly woke up to my hand clutching a soft, comfortable shirt. My head was resting on a rugged chest, the sound of the morning along with a calming, steady breath. A strong arm was holding me close. It had the smell of morning dew and...

James Potter!

OH MERLIN! I've been here sleeping (not that one you dirty people) with James the whole night! Merlin! What's Grace and Emma going to say?! Not that they're talking to me right now. I looked down at James's watch.

"MERLIN!" I screamed as I jumped out of James's grasp! "James get up, we're late! it's 8:21 class starts in 10 minutes! I'm never going to make it in time to the dorm, much less change, or have a shower!" I felt his hand reach out as he groaned, he grasped me again, and pulled me to his chest. "Yeah well we still have 10 minutes." He said really sleepily, without opening his eyes. I wriggled, and twisted but i couldn't get out of his grasp. I gave up. "Fine."

As I lay on his chest I remembered how we talked at night to each other and got to know each other. I knew James was an idiot, just not how he was smart too. Eventually I heard him whisper into my ear. "You know we could just stay here all day if you wanted. I could show you the school. The parts that you've never seen. The things you would never have noticed" I didin't need to turn to know he had a smirk on his face. "I'm sure you could stay here, but unlike you, I've got a reputation. I've lived in this school for 7 years, I know it well enough, so thanks but no thanks." I turned to see James's face and only then did I realize how close we were. My nose brushed against his. The distance between us was so small, we were breathing in the same air. I felt like forgetting everything and just go back to sleep on that comfortable shirt but I knew we couldn't just do that."Anyways we need to go now, and come up with some excuse for being late.

I turned around again, and tried to pretend I didn't have emotions and nothing had just happened.

"You do know I always have an excuse, right?" James slowly stood, up pulling me up with him.

I don't know, but I guess James does and for now, I think I can trust him on that

-- James's POV --

This is heaven. For the past two years, all I'd ever wanted was to be alone with Lily, and now it's finally happening. I know we're still getting to know each other but I can't help but be happy. I don't think she noticed but she called me James just now, and isn't acting like I'm a creature from space.

I can't stop smiling when I think of last night when she took solace in my arms. At first I was scared and awkward about it. I didn't want to mess it up and ruin everything. Eventually, it came to me naturally. It felt amazing to be so close. So, are we mates now? I don't know the answer to that. I guess? Well for now that's not really a problem, so I'm not going to think about it.

My hand is still wrapped around her waist, and she doesn't seem to care, so I don't either.

We eventually make our way to the prefects bathroom. "The prefects bathroom? Really James?" She said it as if she was done with me, but she looked up and smiled, letting me know it was a joke. I smiled back as I replied; "Yeah why not we are prefects aren't we?"

I stood right in front of the door and said the password, "rice." I opened the door to the bathroom, as Lily looked at me confused,

"Wait, you named it rice?" She sounded thoroughly astonished. I smiled, "Yeah, you weren't there to name it with me, along with other passwords, so I named it rice guessing that you would have too."
