Warning: Minor curse words

Jack had always said to the fellow newsies that it gets cold in Manhattan during the winter. Everyone said so, but I never believed them because the summers are so warm. But I was wrong.

I'm lying in bed right now, curled into a ball because we don't have blankets. Many boys get into pairs of two for sleeping in the winter because of the cold, and a few of them even offered to be my partner, but I declined.

I look around the room, where you can see people's breaths as they sleep. My eyes land on the only other person without a partner. Crutchie, who just so happens to be my crush since my first day working.

I quietly tiptoe away from my bed and towards Crutchie's, where he's sprawled out on his bed, clearly not bothered by the cold.

Once I'm standing right next to him, I bring my shaky hand out, gently nudging him. He doesn't wake up at first, so I nudge him again, and this time he wakes up. He lets out a groan before turning on his side and sees me.

"Hey, Y/n, you need anythin'?" Crutchie whispers, and I shyly nod.

"I- I know that- It's really cold so- I mean, do you maybe wanna- I guess I need a partner- but if you don't wanna be mine that's fine- wait never mind that sounded weird-" I say, stumbling over each word.

"Do you wanna share me bed?" He asks, making my face as red as Albert's hair. Thank god it's too dark in here for him to see. But I nod with my head down, too shy to even speak.

Without another word, he moves over, creating enough room for me to fit next to him. I hesitate for a moment before carefully sliding in bed next to him.

Once I'm in bed, with both of our chests facing each other, he wraps his arm around my body, pulling me closer to him. My head is resting on his shoulder/chest, while his surprisingly buff body is pressed against mine. I feel like I'm in heaven. The room instantly feels warmer, stopping the hypothermia from killing me.

"Thank you, Crutchie," I whisper, trying my best to remain quiet. I feel my heart leap to my throat as I feel him plant his lips on my forehead, giving it a gentle kiss.

"No problem, Y/n. Love ya," he says, making my heart skip a beat. But excitement is cut off by my realization that he loves me in a platonic way.

"I love you too," I say, my heart starting to calm down just a bit saying that. After what feels like forever being in his arms, I feel my eyelids grow heavier and myself drift off into sleep.

Timeskip

I slip out of my slumber at the sounds of people moving around and realize that it must be morning. I'm about to get up when I feel Crutchie pull me closer to his body, and I never want to leave this feeling of security. I realize now that Crutchie's spooning me, and his face is nestled into my neck, with his nose tickling my cheek.

"Hey, would ya look at dat, Y/n slept wit' Crutchie last night," I hear Mush say. I close my eyes to make sure no one sees I'm awake.

"Oh yeah, they did. Ain't that just adorable," Race's voice responds. "They'd make a cute thing, ya know? I mean, wit' Y/n obviously crushin' on him and Crutchie tryin' tah hide his feelings, it's fun tah watch them both freak out when we force 'em tah be togethah."

Those damn bastards. I knew they were trying to get me and Crutchie closer. I want to punch them and thank them at the same time, but can't because of Crutchie.

"Hey, boys, would ya shuddup? She's sleepin'," Crutchie's voice whispers in a gruff tone, which is the most attractive thing I've ever heard.

"Well would ya look at dat, he's awake. Hey, do ya like Y/n?" Race asks him. I practically hold my breath as to just hear Crutchie's response.

"Yeah, no duh I like 'er. But she don't like me like dat, so screw off," I hear Crutchie's voice say as he buries his face in my neck and I snicker.

"Bitch, yes I do," I say, causing him to move away. The noise of quiet laughter and chuckling fills the room as I sit up. Looking down at the crippled boy, I notice two things, how much shock he's in, and how red his face is.

"Wait, what?" He asks, his voice sounding so confused and excited at the same time. I roll my eyes with a smile and lean down, kissing his nose.

"For the record, I do like you. So don't go around spreading lies," I say with a smile, watching as the tip of his nose is now bright red from him blushing.

I stand up and walk past the boys to the bathroom, where I need to go get changed. While walking past, Jack holds up his hand for me to high five, which I do. And while walking past Albert, I hear him snicker and speak in the most sarcastic voice I've ever heard.

"Who could have ever guessed dat the two lovebirds like eachudda. I mean, wit' Crutchie always huggin' 'er and Y/n always starin' at 'im, I was soooo shocked tah know this," Albert says, so I smack him and return with a comment that's equally sarcastic.

"Shut up, we all know that you like Race, so go confess now. Oh wait, I accidentally just told everyone. Whoopsies."
