Chapter 11

When Al and Tobias woke me up it was Tobias his turn to sleep. I gave him the hoodie and went to Al. Tobias fell asleep quite fast. How could that boy sleep that much a day?? Al and I started talking a bit. I got to know him better he told me more about district 2 and that district 2 tributes like train their whole life, but Al didn't he kind of refused. He was asked a couple of times or he really was a district 2 boy, but he was you could see it because he was long (length) and he wasn't skinny or something like me, I'm quite skinny. You can ask how? District 10 provides livestock. Well let me tell you something: It's like super illegal to take something. The neighbour boy did it once and he spent like 4 years in the hospital. He almost died. No one knows how he isn't allowed to tell what happened to him. I started talking about love lives because it was one of the only things I didn't really know about Al. He told me that he had a crush on a girl, but he wasn't sure or she liked him back. He wasn't that confident about it. I told to him:'' Okay if you win these games. You are gonna ask her and if she refuses. She is some stupid girl that doesn't deserve you because you are one of the nicest boys I've ever meet in my life and you're a career! I don't like most of the careers, but you are just an awesome sweet boy!'' He thought it was really nice of me to say that, then he asked about my love life and stuff. I said:'' I've been asked twice in my life, I refused. They were nice you know, but it was like typical boys. They only thought of themselves and thought that every girl liked them. I don't really think either I'm ready for a boyfriend you know. I'm just 16, I've never really thought of my future, I live in the moment. If I survive the games I never have to go back to this arena. I'll move with my family to a bigger house. Caleb can still be in the games, but that's like a tiny chance.'' He totally understood that but whispered something to himself. It sounded something like: He's not gonna like that. I asked what he said. He said: Oh nothing, just some self-thoughts.'' ''Okay..'' After some hours we saw the sunrise. We decided to just stay in the cave. It would be the savest. We woke Tobias. We had a small breakfast. We shared with the three of us a half-filled water bottle and each of us took half a stroopwafel and drop. We saw on the package that it was in English liquorice. That's why it was familiar. It helps when it's outside really hot. We have at home some packages for really hot days when we have to work. 

We stayed for a couple of days in the cave. In the meanwhile, 4 other tributes were killed: Both from 12, the girl from 9 and the boy from 4. District 12, 11 and 4 were completely out now. We started with 24 tributes. At the moment we were still with 13. I had some idea that the games wouldn't take that long anymore. The longest game ever took a month. The shortest 1 day. I think these games would take something like 2 weeks. We were now 4 days in the arena. We decided that we had to find water in the arena. We packed our stuff, erased any sign that we've been here. We've erased like the braids and threw them into some bushes. When we walked for half an hour we still didn't find any water. Where would the water be? After walking another half an hour we arrived at a small lake. I wasn't sure or the water was clean. We filled the bottles. I did some sodium in it that we've found in a smaller pocket inside one of the backpacks I dripped it in the bottles. In about 3 hours we would have clean and freshwater. We washed our hands and hair a bit. When we were almost finished we heard voices. Shoot we had to go now. We grabbed our backs and left, but the voices hear us and we saw them. It was Jeanine with 2 other girls. We had some eye contact with Jeanine. She was kind of shooked, but the other girls started attacking us.  It was the girl from 3 and the girl from 8. They had for weapons an bow and arrow and a slingshot. I grabbed my axe out of my bag, Tris grabbed her knives and Al the bow and arrow. The 3 of us refused to kill Jeanine. We couldn't kill Tobias his district tribute, but we knew neither of the other girls. I couldn't kill someone. I felt like I wasn't ready for it or something. I just started to fight with the girl from 8. She was 1 year younger than me, Al fought with the girl from 3. Tobias helped Al, Al was like a terrible fighter and the girl was quite good. Jeanine just stood and watched. She was like in some trance or something. I won from the girl from 8, but I refused to kill her we both had each other blood over our arms and faces. I got a bloody nose and my arm blooded heavily. Al and Tobias (mostly Tobias) I don't know what they did, but they killed the girl from 3, it was accidentally. She attacked Al with a knife, but Tobias punched the knife back what hit her own neck. It was really bloody. I even think I broke my nose, but I'm not sure.  a minute later we heard the cannon for the girl from 3. Jeanine and the girl from 8 brought the body away and left it. We all washed ourselves a bit. Then we kind of left like nothing happened. We all didn't want to fight anymore. You can tell that it was some really weird fight. I did break my nose. It hurts not that much, but I surely fell it.  We decided to go back to the cave. It was like the only safe place.

When we arrived there we saw something unexpected. We saw one backpack. We expected that there was nobody because it was really silent. We were wrong... The tributes from 1 attacked us, wait how could they have only one backpack? When I had a fast glance I saw that the girl had a bag on her back. The boy attacked Al first. He hit him in his stomach. Al fell down and start bleeding. Tobias attacked the boy as fast as he could. He killed him. I fought with the girl. She cut me a tiny bit in my cheek. I punched her down. She passed out. We brought the body of the boy outside and the girl she passed out body some further away. In an open place so she was able to see my other tributes. We also grabbed her backpack and the one from the boy. We didn't kill her because we had to go back as fast as we could to Al who was still bleeding heavy. In the backpack of the girl were bandage and some other medical things. Probably from sponsors. I did the bandage about Al's stomach. Tobias made sure he would still live. Al's heartbeat was like really weak. We kept talking to him. He reacted every time slower. I tried to do as much as I could. I hoped it worked. We cleaned the wound with some water before putting a bandage on it. It didn't work it kept bleeding. Suddenly Al turned white and his eyes kept open. We didn't hear or feel a heartbeat any more. This was the moment we heard a cannon. 

(Authors note: I literally cried while writing this part. It's emotional. I don't really know why I need to cry. Al died already in the Divergent book and movie then I didn't cry. So If you're very sensitive you can cry at this moment...)

Al was gone ... forever. I started crying softly. I failed to help Al. I took the red bandage off. It was completely red of his blood. We would clean it later to reuse it if we needed it. It felt horrible that Al wasn't here anymore. We brought his body outside. It was really heavy. We grabbed the braids and made small grief. We both gave a small speech for him before the drone would pick him up Tobias went first. Then it was my turn:'' Al I know you for less than 2 weeks, you didn't deserve to die. You are an awesome, sweet and amazing boy. You just deserved a long happy life with the girl you like. I don't even know her name. In these last days because of the arena, we became a lot closer. You felt like having another big brother. You always listen carefully and you've been there for everyone. You will watch us now from heaven. I hope so much that you can hear me. I miss you so much right now.'' We grabbed some useful stuff. Took the hoodie of his body that he wore because he was cold and left the body. We returned to the cave and saw how he got picked up by a drone. That's the moment when I couldn't keep my tears anymore. I started crying. Tobias comforted me I was happy that I wasn't alone at this moment. We had to go further. We were still in the games. This was also the moment that I realized I really had to win. I know there can only be 1 winner, but Tobias and I both had to go home. What happened to Al can't happen to Tobias or me...

The rest of the day was awful silent.  My wounds stopped with bleeding. On my cheek, there was a small scar and we put the other bandage around my arm I didn't lost that much blood as Tobias did the first day. We stayed in the cave. At 8:00 PM we heard the anthem and saw the tributes that died today: the girl from 3, The boy from 8 and Al... The night felt colder than normal. We had now the blanket and the hoodie. Tobias would keep the guard first and he took the blanket and I took the hoodie. It still smelled like Al. With some tears in my eyes, I fell asleep. The moment before I fell asleep I felt I think it were lips giving a small kiss on my forehead. Then I fell asleep.
