Chapter Nine

"How is it you eat that stuff everyday?" Sophie asked Dex.

"Whadoyamea?" Dex said with a mouth full of green goop.

"Uh, could you maybe repeat that with your mouth not filled with food?"

Dex gulped down the slime, "Sorry. What do you mean, this stuff is delicious."

Sophie raised her eyebrow, "Don't you remember Level Two? I basically spit that stuff out right when it touched my tongue. Besides, the fact that you've eaten that every lunch period for the past two years is kinda sketchy."

"How so? And just because we have different taste in cafeteria food doesn't mean you have to scold me for it."

"Because whatever that, green goo you call your lunch, is, burned off all my taste buds." she laughed.

"Agree to disagree then?" he held out his hand to her.

"Agree to Disagree." Sophie replied and shook his hand.

"How are you two still friends? You guys are complete opposites." Fitz said as he approached their lunch table. He placed his food on the table and sat down across from Sophie and next to Dex.

"We have some differences but we're not complete opposites. Besides, don't opposites attract?" Dex said.

"Isn't that a weird human phrase?" Biana came in, sitting next to Dex.

"It's called science, Bi, and it applies to the elvin world too." Sophie told her.

"Since when? Am I the only one who's never heard of this?"

"Yes." Everyone said simultaneously.

"What'd I miss?" Keefe asked sitting down next to Sophie.

"Just the usual, Dex's weird choice in lunch food and Biana not knowing how the world works." she told him.

"I know how the world works, it just takes me a little longer to understand!"

"Really? How many sides are on a cube?" Fitz asked his sister.

"Ooh! I know this one! Uhhh... It's umm... I know this!  Oh oh- I know it- IT'S FOUR!!!"

"Yuh huh." Sophie mumbled.

"REALLY? I WAS RIGHT?!?!"

"Nope." Keefe said popping the p at the end.

Biana slumped in her seat and started eating at the purple and blue stew on her plate. Tam and Linh walked to the table guarding a very uncomfortable Glimmer who was slouching behind the twins.

"Uh, hey guys, is it okay if Glimmer sits with us today?"

"Oh, I get it. Bangs Boy has a girlfriend!" said Keefe.

Sophie could notice a slight tint of pink appear on his nose and cheeks before he looked to the floor. Now, Sophie was no empath- as she knew of-, but she could feel a pang of hurt come from Biana. Maybe it was just a superpower that came with being best friends, but it was as if the two could understand each other with just a simple glance.

"Not to be rude or anything, but no, she's definitely not my girlfriend. Now can she sit with us or not?"

Everything stayed quiet and just looked at each other, waiting for someone to speak up first.
