Jocelyn slept late into the next day, still recovering from yesterday's painful induction. While I and other much needed volunteers set up the hall for the incoming pack leaders. Jasper pestered me relentlessly. His intolerable mood primarily stemming from me having left our mate unattended in such a vulnerable condition, Dylan apparently no longer acceptable; The pending social interaction also being a contributing factor to his prickliness. When I couldn't take it any longer and was certain everything was being handled, I abandoned ship and made my way back to the house.
I shut the front door softly, for fear of waking her too suddenly and triggering a panic. Dylan was found sprawled in every direction on the sofa, his ironic t-shirt covered in crumbs of various kinds of junk food whose empty packages littered the coffee table. The Tv was turned to something involving tigers.
As I made my way to the back of the couch he half-turned from the screen, "Humans are crazy dude honestly, why would you even-Oh!" His lazy smile turned circular, eyes widening considerably as if suddenly realizing why I'd be home, "I just checked on her a few minutes ago she's fine, still asleep, but uh," he paused, sadness softening his boyish features, "she's been whimpering and talking from time to time."
His warm brown eyes flickered towards the ceiling, listening intently for any sounds of distress. Having found none, he sent a sympathetic smile my way before turning back to the screen and resuming his chaotic program. "Thanks, Dyl," I called from over my shoulder as I made my way upstairs.
I crawled my way across the bed to Jocelyn and slowly pulled her rigorously twisted sheets out from under her that had become entangled with her t-shirt during the course of tossing and turning. My calloused fingers grazed her soft stomach as I pulled the oversize shirt back in place. She breathed out a contented sigh and shifted closer to me in her sleep, nuzzling her self against my chest in a cat-like fashion. Her addicting, almost tropical smelling scent, that filled the air was our personal antidote for today's hellish monotony.
I laid there still with my legs entwined with hers and watched the comforting, rhythmic rise and fall of her chest. Just when my body fully relaxed and sleep beckoned her chest hitched and quivered with a sharp intake of breath. Her dainty hand fisted, bunching up the thin fabric of my shirt. Her fingers flexed as she implanted the sensation of crippling fear and forced it into the depths of my mind. My muscles tensed and lip bunched involuntarily, stretching upwards and flattening itself against my gritted teeth.
Suddenly, the room vanished before my eyes and was replaced by an illusion of my body plummeting an unsettling distance towards an icy black sea. I jerked back in shock, aggressively slamming my head into the backboard with a loud smack. I groaned and held my head in my hands, rubbing the back of my throbbing skull as I blinked away the fading image.
Jocelyn stirred awake beside me, scrunching her still closed eyes and burying her head deeper into my chest. Her back arched with a long yawn that only gave way after her chest had bounced and hiccuped in surrender. My hand moved on its own accord, sliding along the length of her curved spine. Her muscles tensed under my hand and wild eyes flew open in a panic. The instant her frantic gaze met mine she physically deflated. She let out a long huffed breath through her nose as she burrowed her creased cheeks deeper into the pillow.
"I feel full," she mumbled sleepily, "Heavy, in my head." I nodded, rubbing her back in the hopes it would provide a monochrome of comfort. It had only taken me a couple of hours to adjust to the pack bond, but her wolf was much different than mine and I never had her abilities to contend with either. Her seemingly endless reserve of strength continued to baffle me. I internally scowled myself for thinking a mate would make me weak much toJaspers' pleasure.
