Zoella  POV(Present day)

As I lingered in the doorway, the doctor finally gestured for me to enter. He had just shared the wonderful news that Chloe was on the mend. A wave of joy washed over me at the thought of her returning home, yet a shadow of sadness loomed because I knew my apartment wasn't truly a home for her. I let out a heavy sigh as I rose from the chair, reminded that I still hadn't settled Chloe's medical bills. Just then, I felt her presence behind me, and I fought back the tears that threatened to spill.

"Hey sis, I'm so thrilled to be done with my therapy! The doctor said I can come home tomorrow," she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around me in a warm embrace that felt so right. I pulled back to meet her gaze, my heart swelling with pride.

"I'm really glad you can walk again, I truly am," I replied, managing a small smile as I tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"So, Zoe, have you heard anything about Dad?" The mention of that struck me like a knife, unraveling the fragile grip I had on my emotions. It had been over three and a half years since he and Mom had left us, and now, standing before Chloe, I felt the weight of that absence more than ever.

I slowly shook my head, a frown creeping across my face. "I haven't heard any updates about them, but I did visit the mansion."

"What happened there?" she inquired, guiding me to a bench in the hallway.

"The place was in complete disarray, Chloe; I have a feeling someone might be onto us."

"What do you mean? Why would anyone be after us?"

"Remember when Dad first handed us a gun to hold?" I asked.

"Yeah, that was terrifying; we were only six! What's your point?"

"He acted like he was preparing us for something big, like a war, and maybe this is the battle we were meant to face."

Chloe rolled her eyes, "What are you talking about, Zo? A war? With who, exactly? Our enemies?"

"Perhaps, Chloe. The state of the house was alarming, truly."

"Well, it's a mess because it's been left alone for ages, with no one to clean it up, and it's on a creepy street to boot."

"I get that, but just consider the possibility that someone might be watching us."

"I hear you, Zo, but if I get discharged tomorrow, where will I stay?"

"You can crash at my apartment until we track down Dad."

"It sounds like you're saying that I'll be staying at your place once I'm discharged tomorrow, right"

"That's precisely what I meant, but I won't be staying overnight; I'll just come by to visit."

She clarified. "Oh, so you have a boyfriend now? Planning to crash at his place? Wow, when did my sister become so attractive?" Chloe remarked, eyeing my outfit from head to toe.

"Time really flies, doesn't it?" I replied. "Actually, I got a job because I wanted to help cover your hospital and therapy expenses."

"What do you mean by that?" Chloe inquired, looking puzzled.

"Your medical bills are quite hefty, so I found a better-paying job for a month to help out," I explained.

"I'm really sorry; I didn't realize I was putting you through so much," she said, her expression softening.

"It's alright; it's just a cooking job, and I can manage it, but you need to stick with me until I finish this deal."

"How many weeks do you have left?" she asked.
