Zavion POV
Making friends with her brought me a lot of joy; I never anticipated it would be so effortless, yet the reality that she only has three days left filled me with sadness. Ethan chose to take a day off from work today, claiming he was unwell, so he decided to stay home. Earlier that morning, I took Mom to the hospital, ensuring that no one would question my absence. I settled beside Ethan as he worked on his laptop; he typically doesn't mix work with play and rarely gets sick, but today felt different. He glanced at me and let his laptop fall to the side, letting out a heavy sigh.
"Are you alright?" I inquired, crossing my legs.
"Can I ask you something?" he replied.
"Of course, what's on your mind?" I encouraged.
"Zavion, my friend mentioned he likes a girl who's a year older than him."
"Age is just a number; if he truly cares for her, he should pursue her regardless of the age difference," I reassured him.
"But he's uncertain if she feels the same way," he admitted.
"Has he tried to find out?"
"Find out? How?" he questioned.
"By asking her out, messaging her, or gauging her feelings," I explained.
"He hasn't considered that; I'll let him know."
"Ethan, I know you don't usually have time for friends, so tell me, who is the girl that has caught your interest?" I pressed.
"It's not me, Zavion, it's a friend," he insisted.
"Really? I can always tell when you're not being truthful; you're not very good at it, which is why Dad favors you."
"Alright, you got me... Do you remember the pizza girl I mentioned the night you came home?" he finally confessed.
"Pizza girl?" Zoe walked by and greeted us.
"You mean her?" I whispered, intrigued.
"Absolutely, Zavion, I felt an instant connection with her the very first time I laid eyes on her."
"Really? Why didn't you mention it before?"
"There's no one else vying for her attention, so I can ask her out whenever I want, and I'm pretty sure she's single."
"You might be mistaken!"
"What do you mean by that? I'm not sure if she finds me attractive, but I believe I have a shot with her."
"Ian is interested in her too; they went on a date last week, so I doubt you have a real chance."
"What? Why hasn't anyone brought this up?" He asked.
"Because we prefer not to discuss it; Mom thinks Ian is a good match for her."
"And what's your take on it, Zavion? Do you think Ian is right for her?"
"I'm not sure; he treats her well, but I really don't think you stand a chance. You should look for someone else," I replied without hesitation, feeling a wave of confusion wash over me. I had thought Ian was my only competition, but now Ethan seemed to be in the mix too. Thankfully, I had managed to befriend her; otherwise, I might never have had a shot.
As Zoe walked past and headed up the stairs, I noticed Ethan getting shy around her; he immediately buried his face in his laptop when I called her back. I invited her to sit down and suggested we all go out for dinner since she was leaving tomorrow.
She glanced between me and Ethan. "I can cook, and I thought you weren't a fan of fast food."
"I'm not, but I want to make this day memorable for you. Come on, Ethan, say something!" I nudged his leg playfully.
