Zavion POV

Mom surprised us by coming home earlier than we thought she would; we were expecting her in two weeks, but there she was, lounging on the couch. I let out a big sigh as I settled down next to her. "You didn't mention Ian was here, and neither did Dad," she said, intertwining her fingers with mine. "I saw him when I got in this afternoon, but we didn't get a chance to chat."

Mom had a soft spot for Ian, treating him like her own kid, which was pretty rare for stepmoms. She loved hanging out with him because he always brought a smile to her face. "I figured Dad would have filled you in," I replied, glancing at her. "But why are you back so soon? You were supposed to be gone for another two weeks."

She smiled and said, "This is my home too, sweetheart, and your grandmother is doing better now. Plus, I wanted to check on my babies." She gently cupped my face with her hand. "You're eating well, right? Did you finally learn to cook? I know you're not a fan of fast food."

"Yeah, I'm doing okay, but I've really missed your cooking," I admitted with a small grin.

"Aww, just two weeks away and you missed my meals? That's so sweet! You know what?"

"What?"

"I'm making dinner tonight."

"Oh no, Mom, you don't have to do that; you just got back. I can handle dinner."

"That's my boy," she said, playfully pinching my cheeks like I was still a little kid. I know I'm her baby, but I'm grown now, and it's hard to remind her of that.

"Where are your siblings?" she asked. Just then, the doorknob clicked, and Izzy and Zoe burst in. Izzy let out a squeal the moment she spotted Mom, while Mom's gaze was fixed on Zoe.

"You've got a really lovely friend, I must say." Mom grinned as she turned her attention to Zoe. "And who might you be?" she asked, extending her hand for a shake.

Zoe glanced at me, then back at Mom. "I'm Zoella, Izzy's friend," she replied, taking Mom's hand warmly.

"I already like you! How about joining us for dinner?" Mom suggested, and I noticed Zoe's eyes widen in surprise. The vibe was a bit awkward, so I decided to take Izzy into the kitchen and urged her to explain everything to Mom about Zoe. Izzy was nervous about getting in trouble, so I ended up spilling the beans myself.

"So, you're telling me you hired her to cook for you?" Mom asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yep, that's right," I confirmed.

"Oh Zavon, I thought you were picky about food and only liked mine. Looks like this young lady has charmed you," she teased. Honestly, after that kiss with Zoe, I was confused about my feelings. I didn't want to admit I was falling for her; it felt wrong to move on from Zee's memories like that.

"Mom, we're not having this talk," I insisted.

"Alright, alright, no need to get worked up. So, how long is this arrangement?" she pressed.

I smiled, "It's a month-long deal, and she's got two weeks left."

"Mom, her cooking is amazing! She's so talented for her age," Izzy chimed in. Just then, Ian came downstairs and shot a look at Zoe that I didn't like at all. Why does he always have to be interested in the girls I like?

"Hey, Mrs. Gutierrez, how was your trip?" Ian asked, planting a kiss on her cheek. Mom beamed at him while he turned his attention to Zoe. "Wanna catch a movie with me tomorrow?" he asked and her smile was wide and inviting. It was a classic move; every girl seemed to fall for it. I could tell Mom noticed my reaction to the whole thing. Zoe glanced over at me, clearly taken aback, and I met her gaze with a steady stare.
