Zavion POV
I received a notification on my phone, and it was a message from Zoe. She mentioned that she had to leave for a trip and wouldn't return until next week, which happens to be my birthday, although she's unaware of that fact. Before heading out for the blind date my mom had arranged for me, I gave her a kiss on the cheek. I couldn't help but notice that her health was deteriorating day by day, despite the medication she was taking. She had even started chemotherapy, and while I felt it was wrong to keep this from my dad, I wanted to honor her wishes.
I hopped into my car and drove to the restaurant where I was supposed to meet my date. Mom had told me that she was 23, the same age as Zoe. As I walked into the restaurant, I spotted her right away; she was dressed elegantly, which was no surprise given her affluent background. It seemed that her polished style was a constant, even outside of her professional life.
She was rocking a cream-colored plane skirt paired with a matching cream shirt, and those black pencil heels she wore really tied the whole look together. Her hair was beautifully curled, and she seemed to embody perfection itself. Normally, I'm not drawn to girls who seem flawless, but Zoe was different; she revealed to me the beauty of imperfection, which made me want to get closer to her because she had this genuine curiosity about the world. I took a step closer and gently took her hand, catching her off guard as she glanced at my outfit with surprise. "I can guess what you're thinking—yes, I'm Zavion, Mr. Gutierrez's son," I said with a grin.
Her smile lit up her face. "I'm Serah, and wow, you look even better in person! I didn't expect you to dress like this."
I chuckled, "Yeah, I'm not really into the corporate vibe; I prefer to keep it casual."
"That's cool," she replied, taking a sip of her orange juice while tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She was undeniably pretty, no doubt about it, but she wasn't really my type. It was frustrating how she seemed to have everything together, speaking flawlessly without a single stumble, and that just rubbed me the wrong way.
"So, were you kind of dragged into this situation?"
She met my gaze and replied, "Absolutely. I'm head over heels for this guy, but my parents can't stand him because he doesn't meet their expectations. Now they're pushing me to meet the son of the Gutierrez family."
I shrugged, "I get the feeling you're not a fan of me, and honestly, I'm not really into you either."
She smirked, "I mean, I think you're good-looking, but I'm not into rich guys. They tend to be arrogant and act like they own everything. What about you? Is there someone special in your life?"
I nodded, "Yeah, I have this girl I call Zee, but her real name is Zoe. She's not perfect and drives me crazy sometimes, but that's what makes me like her even more. She's just so real and makes mistakes like everyone else."
She raised an eyebrow, "So why aren't you with her?"
I sighed, "It's a pretty complicated love story."
She leaned in, "You can share it with me. If we want to make this work, we need to understand each other and fight for the ones we love. Plus, I'm genuinely curious about your love story."
"I remember when I was just a little kid and met this girl who was only seven at the time. The first time she came over to my place, she was a total mess—covered in dirt and sporting a few bruises—but there was something about her that was still really charming. She had this huge love for chocolate and would hum along to a song she couldn't even name." I couldn't help but laugh a little as I reminisced about those days. "We went on countless adventures together, and my mom absolutely adored her. But after all those fun times, she just vanished from my life, and I never heard from her again."
