"Are you sure you don't want to come? It could be fun you know." I suggested.
"No offense, but I don't exactly fit with your friends. Besides, I have plans."
"Oh, come on. You're not that-" I paused. "Wait. Did you just say you have plans? On a Friday night? As in plans other than studying? Who are you and what have you done with my brother?" I exclaimed.
"So hard to believe I have a date." He mutters.
"You have a date?" I yelled "I'm so proud of you!" I hugged him tight.
"I'm still the older sibling you know."
"Whatever I want full details later. You can still join us on the beach after if you want."
When the sun was starting to set, I drove to the beach and met Marlene and Uriah. He was going to start the fire for us, so it would be going when the sun finished setting.
A few minutes later, I felt a handful of sand hit my back. Turning around, Uriah pointed to Marlene with his hands up in surrender. I kicked some sand up at her, which made her do that same to Uriah-Who had actually started it.
A full blown war was started. Running along the water, throwing sand at each other, we laughed until our stomachs hurt. Then Uriah tripped, causing a domino effect.
I fell into the water, soaking my hair and clothes.
"You are so lucky I brought extra clothes!" I was a little mad my cute outfit was already ruined, but It was 100% worth it. I changed into a crew neck sweatshirt that I cut at the top to make it loose around my neck and shoulders, and plain black leggings. My hair still looked drenched, so I scrunched It in my hands creating beach waves. I gave it a disheveled look by running my hand through it.
When I got back to the fire pit, everyone else had arrived. Zeke plugged his phone into a portable speaker and played music for us.
For a while, we played Never Have I Ever, but that game looses a lot of excitement when we all know everything about each other.
I realized someone was missing. Going around the circle, I did a quick head count.
One, two, three, four.
HA. Four is four. I'm so funny. Wait where was I?
"Four, where's Delainey? I thought she was coming?" I ask.
"She can't make it." He replies shortly.
"But Fouuurrr. Christina complains "I'm done being the protective friend. I like her." She says proudly.
I think she's a little drunk.
"Yeah Four." I drawl out his name like Chris did. "I invited her too." Christina pokes my face and I laugh loudly.
I suddenly forget what I'm laughing about, and focus on Four's answer.
Maybe I'm a little drunk.
"Tris, she's not coming.
"Why" I pout.
"Well, I thought it'd be kind of awkward since we aren't together anymore." he says bluntly.
Sober now, aren't ya Tris?
"Oh. Sorry."
Zeke distracts him in a conversation that I quickly tone out of. They broke up? As in
Not together.
Apart.
What?I walk away from the group, toward the water, and dip my toes in. Its cold, but feels refreshing.
"Hey." I jump a little.
"Hi."
Then we're both quiet. Suddenly, he laughs. "Well, good thing we can still have normal conversations, huh?"
A bubble of laugher rises from my throat, except nothing about it is humorous.
"Good thing." I reply.
"So, I broke up with Delainey."
"So I heard."
We've always been able to know what the other person was thinking, without having to say it. Right now, I could practically see the unspoken words between us.
Four mutter something like, screw it. Mostly to himself. then says, "I know you're moving on. I can see it. The way you talk and laugh. A weight has been lifted off your shoulders. I don't know how you switched over night but you did."
I can't muster up a reply to that, but he keeps talking.
"I'm glad you're happy. But I know I can make you happy too. And when we're together i'll prove it. We're both different now. So things will be different. But they'll be better. You'll see."
Maybe it's the alcohol making my head fuzzy, but he's speaking in riddles. Different? When were together?
"What are you saying?" I ask slowly.
"I'm saying," he says. "That I'm going to make you fall in love with me over again. You probably will try not to, thinking you shouldn't fall into the old patterns that you just shook off. But we're- I'm-going to be different this time."
"Wait Fo-" I start
"I'm staying, Tris. I'm going to stay. No matter how long it takes." almost at a whisper, he adds "I'm fighting."
Different. Fall for him. Fighting. Stay.
Oh Four, you need to plan these declarations when my head isn't already spinning.

*Hands up if Four is going crazy...or hands up if he is finally realizing what needs to be done? Whadda us think?
