13. Romantic Date

Thorfinn POV:

"Surprise me." Canute said, one leg crossed over the other, as he sipped wine with Thorfinn at the dinner table. Thorfinn grunted, placing a hand on his right cheek. They were in the grand hall, and it was only the two of them, plus a few of the kitchen staff. Everybody else had finished eating, while Thorfinn and Canute purposely and secretly stayed behind to spend some time together.

They were talking about the date Canute asked Thorfinn out on. "I don't think it's fair the I have to organize the date, when you're the one who asked me." Thorfinn replied, grumpily. He sat with his elbows resting on the royal dining table, and his back slumped in an arch.

Canute grinned. "Well, I'm royalty." He said after taking a sip of his red wine. "I'm high maintenance." He remarked, in a seductive tone.

Thorfinn blushed at that comment. Maybe it was because of the smug grin Canute gave him or maybe it was the dominant side of him showing. "W-whatever!" Thorfinn exclaimed, trying to keep his cool. "I don't care. I'll do it, you cocky jerk." He retorted, looking away as his face reddened.

Canute laughed, and tugged on Thorfinn's sleeve cutely.

The next day, Thorfinn stomped around the palace halls, searching for a good place to have a romantic date with Canute. Why would Canute entrust something like this to me? Thorfinn wondered, giving everyone he walked pass a glare and scowl. He knows the only place I can think of is his bedchambers. Thorfinn thought to himself, a slight blush appearing on his cheeks.

Thorfinn passed by Askeladd, and ignored him. Askeladd turned around and waved. "Yo! Thorfinn! Where are you going?" He asked loudly, which was the last thing Thorfinn wanted.

The scowling boy didn't reply. He was extra frustrated today, having been given a task he had no idea about. Askeladd rubbed Thorfinn's head and sighed. "Well... I guess I'll be going now. If you need me Thorfinn, I'll be manning the ships outside." Askeladd said, and he walked off in the other direction.

Thorfinn spun around, his eyes wide, having just thought of an idea. "Askeladd!" He exclaimed, his eyes shining. Askeladd turned around, his eyebrows raised. "Let me join you." Thorfinn said, running up to him.

Canute POV:

"Wow, Thorfinn! I was not expecting you to come with any idea other than my bedchambers!" Canute exclaimed, looking up at the large ship.

Thorfinn looked at the ground, his hands in his pockets. "I'm glad you like it." He muttered, embarrassed.

Canute beamed as he stared at the large ship. It was mainly made out of wood, but it was decorated with red banners and flags. The men on the ship were thinking the decorations are a royal formality for the prince, but they didn't know that it was actually Thorfinn's doing, for his date with Canute. 

Thorfinn gestured towards Canute. "For our date, you need to look as handsome as possible, right?" Thorfinn said, as he held Canute's silky hair in his  hand and tied it in a ponytail with a red ribbon. Canute nodded, blushing at Thorfinn's cold touch on his skin. Then Thorfinn unclasped his red cloak, and tossed it to the side. Canute was wearing blue royal garments, and Thorfinn was wearing his usual clothes. There was nothing else for the viking boy to wear, to be honest.

Suddenly, a big man appeared from behind Canute. "What are you two doing?" Thorkell questioned with a loud booming voice, causing everyone around them to turn and look at the two boys. Thorfinn had his hands on Canute's cheek, and he quickly took them off. Canute stopped him by grabbing his wrists gently, and looked up at Thorkell.

"He's my guard. He's making sure I'm properly dressed and safe for the trip on the boat." Canute explained to the big man. 

"Ahh... I see." Thorkell nodded his head and slapped Thorfinn's back, not thinking much of it. Thorfinn fell forward because of the big slap, and Canute caught him lightly by the shoulders. Canute and Thorkell chuckled, while Thorfinn glared and gritted his teeth at Thorkell.
