Viki's POV

I had not been getting much sleep lately. I have mostly been staying up with Soda as he stressed himself to death over Pony being missing. This morning, the paper came with Johnny, Pony, and Cookie's school photos in the paper saying that they were wanted for murder. Dally got hauled in the morning the paper came out and he told the cops, and everyone else that they were headed for Texas. I didn't believe it for a second. Cookie would never agree to go to Texas.

"Vikki!" Clint called from the living room. I stepped out of my bedroom, working on a paper and asked what was up. He responded, "phone call for you!"

Something bouncing inside me, telling me that I had to answer the phone. I raced down the stairs so fast that my purple skirt wrapped around my legs and I dashed to the phone. I picked it up and held the receiver against my face and I answered, "hello?"

"It's Dal." Dally said.

"Oh," I said, my shoulders relaxing down. I really hoped that it was Cookie. "What's up?"

"There's something I need to tell ya... I-I promised... man, can you just meet me at the lot in... oh, twenty minutes?"

I peered into the kitchen to see that it was a quarter to noon, and it was going to take nearly twenty minutes to walk there anway. I agreed and asked, "what's this about?"

"Can't say, phones may be tapped."

"What?"

"Can you make it?"

"Ah'll have to get by the folks." I said.

"Just say you're going to see Soda. They seem to let you do that."

Taking his advice, I told him that I would see him soon. I hung up, put on some shoes, and told Clint that I was going to be visiting Soda. Karen was in the kitchen, baking a pie.

"Just be careful." Clint warned.

"Ah will," I promised and walked out the door.

The walk to the east side would be much more entertaining if I had something to do during that time. The only source of entertainment I had was my own humming.

Dally stood up against a tree, smoking a ciggy and tossing it onto the gravel when he saw me approach.

"This better be good." I said in my tuffest voice.

He exhaled the smoke he had in his lungs and said, "you oughta swear ya ain't gonna tell anyone. Not even Sodapop."

"Ah swear," I said.

"They ain't in Texas."

"Ye ken where they are? Where are they?" I asked, blubbing on and on all my questions.

"Shhh." Dally said, closing his eyes and touching his temple. "God, man, take a breath."

I opened my mouth to burst out another question, but I knew that he would probably leave if I did anything to upset him so I kept my mouth shut.

"They're staking out in Windrixville." He said, "don't worry, they're fine. Just hiding out there until everything simmers down."

"Dal, it's nae going tae simmer down." I said, "they killed a lad."

"Correction, Johnny killed a lad. Cookie and Pony are just accessories."

"Tae murder?"

"Right."

"Dally..."

"Potato, potato."

"Nae, potato murderer."
