Chapter 17| Rencounters

*Miami, Florida*

|Percy Jackson|

Shit.

What is she doing here? We were supposed to meet in one month, not now.

"A-Annabeth?", I asked. I could feel hot tears threatening to fall, but I didn't know why. I had seen her months ago, why am I being emotional now?

I don't know who took the first step, but soon enough, we were face to face, our bodies almost touching.

I didn't hesitate in enveloping her in a hug, and she didn't hesitate in responding. Her sweet aroma of lemons made its way to my nostrils. Oh, how I missed her scent.

Her whole body was trembling with her muffled sobs, and I felt my shoulder starting to get wet, but I didn't mind.

"I'm sorry... I'm sorry I ignored you, i-it's just that..", she started, but I shushed her.

"I know, Wise Girl. You were trying to save my parents", I whispered, my left hand stroking her hair.

"I missed you so much, Percy... Everybody did", she said, and I couldn't help but smile.

"Yeah, I know. And I missed all of you, too", I said. Before she could answer, someone cleared their throat behind us.

We broke apart and turned towards my friends, but not before I sent a comforting smile her way.

Evelyn took a step forward, and I immediately knew she was judging Annabeth. Her eyes raked all over her figure, finally resting on her face. Her gaze fleeted to my own for a second before looking back towards Annabeth

Ever since we left that party house in Cancun, I had a feeling she had been acting quite distant towards me, though I have no idea why. I tried to ask her multiple times, but she just shrugged it off with a forced smile. I thought it could be since I woke up next to a stranger, and Evelyn might have gotten the wrong idea, but I doubt she would believe I was unfaithful to her.

"Who are you?", Evie asked, narrowing her eyes at Annabeth. The said girl returned the gesture. I stared at my girlfriend confused, sensing an unknown emotion in her tone of voice.

"Annabeth Chase. I believe we met before, at my friend's wedding. You were... accompanying Ajax?", Annabeth introduced, a suspicious glint in her stormy gray eyes. Her hand flew up, gripping my forearm, probably sensing something was off.

My entire body tensed up at what she said. I totally forgot about Ajax.

Evie also seemed quite stunned, probably because she remembered her. She looked at me for a second before her eyes quickly returned towards Annabeth, her eyes turning into a murderous glare once she noticed her hand on my arm.

For a moment, my whole body froze on the spot. I had never seen Evelyn look so... mad. I didn't take her as a jealous person, but then again, I would probably react a similar way if my girlfriend's ex-boyfriend were holding her.

Slowly, I shrugged Annabeth's hand off, and I swear I saw a glint of disappointment flash in her eyes for a second.

As I thought about our current situation, I couldn't help but recall something similar that had happened while we were visiting Ghana. I think that was the first time I had seen Evelyn acting out on her jealousy, although I didn't realize it back then.

We had been walking around the place for quite a while, and before we realized, it was already noon, so we decided to stop somewhere to have lunch. We found a restaurant that looked cozy and traditional. The country's flag was hanging on top of the front doors, and as soon as you entered the place, you noticed pictures of Ghana's football team nailed to the wall.
