We walked into town being swarmed by people. Usually we aren't around many people since we live outside of town and rarely step foot inside. Remington usually makes trips into town the most, stealing things, selling things we stole, sometimes to just talk to people. I didn't mind going into town, I certainly didn't like it as much as Remington did but I didn't dislike it as much as Corban.
I'm pretty sure Corbans the only who actually hates going to town. He doesn't like all the noise and people being everywhere. It's not like he's an anxious person or anything he just doesn't like being around big groups of people.
And then there's Reece, of course she loves every opportunity she can get to talk to someone. Except she has some weird fear of being left alone in crowds, or basically being left alone in general. She's an extremely clingy person. It's makes things tedious when we have to all split up to hunt or steal something. Reece will always whine and beg to go with one of us.
Suddenly I'm grabbed by the arm and pulled forward as Remington leads us threw the crowd. We find ourselves standing in front of an old restaurant now turned into some sort of tavern. Remington pulls me in and the others follow. Inside its loud and noisy. There's a few drunk guys sitting at the bar talking loudly. Some slutty-dressed women standing by the bar waiting for someone to buy them a drink.
Remington sits us down at a table and looks around smiling. I know why he's so happy. It's because he's here to drink. Remington has bad habits. He's a pretty heavy drinker, he can never save money, he doesn't care about anything, sometimes I'll catch him buying some weird new drug that people have made to replenish their addiction, and I'm pretty sure he'll go sleep with a prostitute every now and then.
Now I know that makes him seem like a bad guy and all but Remington just wants to have fun. That's all he wants. Sure we do things that are "illegal" (but you can't really consider it illegal if there is no government to force whatever laws people have made).
"I'm gonna go get a drink," Remington says as he stands up from the table.
"You do know they have waiters here? It's actually pretty nice place. A good sign of society getting put back together," Reece said.
"If society had the chance of getting put back together it would've happened already," Corban said, "To be honest I wouldn't want society to be put back together,"
"You barely remember what life was like before the war," I scoff, "Cause let me tell you it was a lot better than this, I had a working phone and everything, or do you even know what a phone is--"
"I know what a phone is, I may be young but I'm smarter than you, Reece, and Remington all put together," Corban says.
"Adding Reece and Remington doesn't make much of a difference Corb," I reply.
"HEY!" Reece exclaims, "Ya know I'm a lot smarter than you think! Is it because I'm a girl you think your smarter than me or something? Huh? You sexist!" Reece jokingly scolds.
"Now who said your stupid because you have a vagina?" I ask.
"I'm not stupid period!" Reece but back.
"Says the girl who got stuck in a fence," Corban muttered under his breath.
"The same girl who doesn't know multiplication," I tease.
"Its not my fault I wasn't given any schooling! All the schools were blown up!" Reece argued.
"Corban learned," I point out.
"That's because frickin' Corban's Dad was smart and he thought him things!" Reece argued, "Right Corb?"
"Uh yeah, he did," Corban muttered as he glanced down.
Just as he did Remington walked back over to the table and set down a beer as he sat down, "Where's your guys waiter now huh?" He scoffed.
"We can wait five minutes unlike you," Corban said, "Fucking alcoholic,"
"Okay Corn Cob, but at least I know how to have fun and I just don't sit there and mope," Remington said as he took a sip of his drink, "Besides we came here to have fun,"
"I came here to eat," Corban says.
"Yeah me too," I put in. I knew Remington probably wouldn't eat. He had some weird fear of having his food made by anyone other than himself, his drinks too. It's why he always went up to the bar to watch them get made. Maybe it was a sanitary thing of something but then again this man wasn't exactly your average germaphobe.
"I came here to have fun and eat," Reece put in.
"I'm guessing your not going to eat?" I asked.
"I can steal something on the way home," Remington shrugs, "Besides the food here isn't really that good,"
"How do you know if you've never tried--"
"Can I take your order?" A very tired woman asked as she walked up to our table. Restaurants these days aren't exactly like how they were before the war, no one really gives a shit about being polite these days, we only care about food and money.
"Can I just get a water please?" Corban asked.
"Root beer," Reece said.
"A water for me," I say.
"Okay," The waitress mutters under her breath as she walks off. It's kind of a good thing that everyone's an asshole nowadays, because it's easier to tell if someone wants to sell you something useless, wants to get in your pants, or is trying to kill you.
