The memory faded into dark shadows again and was sucked into a trail of darker memories in Sophie's mind.
Sophie pulled herself away from Oralie's head and was whisked back into reality.
"Sophie!" Everybody yelled urgently.
"We need -" Sophie started, but Biana interrupted.
"Or - Oralie," Biana said, pointing with a trembling arm. Sophie swivelled around to where Biana was pointing to.
Oralie was slumped over on the ground, twitching, eyes rolled back.
"No!" Sophie shouted, running to Oralie's side.
No. This couldn't be. Oralie was breaking from guilt. No.
Sophie kneeled down and pressed her fingers to the Councillor's temple, taking a deep breath.
Oralie's head was in fragments. Some memories were intact, but slowly slipping away. Some were already shattered. Shards of memories pushed against Sophie's mental barriers. Everything was in chaos. Sophie was stuck in a raging tornado. While her mental barriers held strong, Sophie couldn't find a trail of warmth to follow, to grow, to inflict from.
Could she get through this?
How?
Did she need to pull herself out of Oralie's mind to think of a plan?
But then she could run out of time.
The guilt must have been strong in order to break Oralie quickly.
Sophie didn't know how long the Councillor could last until there was nothing left for her to save.
Unless...
She could gather the remaining intact happy memories, and hold them together, gathering warmth until there would be enough to inflict.
It was worth a try.
Or else the Councillor would be broken forever.
Even though Sophie's heart still ached from the wound that Oralie had given her, the effort that Oralie had taken to make Sophie's life happy, was still there.
An intact memory drifted over to Sophie, away from the tornado of broken ones.
Sophie dived into it.
"We just got an adoption request from the Vackers."
Sophie was seated in a small room, shaped like a cylinder. Twelve regal elves sat on chairs surrounding a circular table.
The Councillors.
"What do you say?" Councillor Emery asked, facing Sophie. Sophie jumped in worry and surprise. She thought that she was just watching the memory! But as she tried to jump out of her seat, her consciousness stood firmly in place. Soon, she realized that she was viewing Oralie's perspective.
"Well, what about the Ruewens?" Oralie asked tentatively. Sophie could feel what the Councillor was thinking.
The Ruewens need Sophie.
They have been trapped in despair.
Sophie needs them as well.
I can repay them with this.
Repay them with what? Sophie wondered.
But then the memory cracked, and Sophie fell through the shards of memories, and into a bottomless hole of darkness.
