6k!!! as always, thank you guys so much <3
you're literally what keeps me motivated to post regularly & w such enthusiasm!!Even as he kept running, his gaze inevitably focused on the weird creature crawling in front of him, feeling the slight panting of Jisung besides him, Minho didn't miss to notice where they were going.
The Chamber of Secrets. When they had reached the bathroom, – which had left both of them very confused – they had been able to see for themselves where the snake was heading. And in all Hogwarts, Minho could only think of one person who could possibly decide to have the entrance to his private room be adorned with elegant, serpentined curlicues, carved out of the brightest white marble – but in a bathroom.
The Slytherin turned around to look at the Gryffindor: the ladder had been brave to immediately state where he was standing with concerns to the situation, and Minho was truly grateful for his support, but he didn't want him to get in danger – not if it could be avoided.
"Jisung, look" he started, as serious as he could get. "I appreciate that you don't want to leave me alone, but you don't really need to-"
"It's not about what I need to do" the boy cut in abruptly, "but about what I want to do. And there's no way I'm letting you tackle that thing by yourself. I'm not trying to say that I'll be of help" he then quickly added, which Minho, despite the situation, thought was absolutely adorable, "but, I mean... always best to die with someone than alone, right?"
The speech didn't really hold a lot of sense, but Minho couldn't find it in himself to argue. Besides, he was not entirely sure that he actually wanted Jisung to leave.
"Well, I can't force you to do anything – it's yours to choose. But still, if at any moment you should feel like-"
"Yes, yes" again, the ladder was quick to interrupt, "but I won't, so don't worry. And I really think we should get going now, before we lose sight of the thing".
That was indeed true, so they followed the snake through the hole that had magically appeared right behind one of the bathroom's sinks – Minho didn't know how it had been possible, but again, they were wizards, and he had come to the conclusion that wizards could do almost everything. More than anything, he was grateful that the gap hadn't closed yet, because he was not sure he would've been able to get it to open if it hadn't already been done beforehand.
The path continued in constant descent: despite the pause that they had taken to confront each other, they luckily could still see the tail of the snake – probably because it had slowed down, which didn't completely shock Minho: could be that it didn't even think it had people following it.
They kept walking, and came at last to an entirely flat surface. Minho set foot on it very carefully, and only when he decided that there were no dangers in sight, allowed Jisung to come out as well.
The Gryffindor didn't look too scared, like the Slytherin had instead anticipated: for whatever reason, the ladder had always been very awkward around him, and had often seemed almost afraid to talk to him. Minho didn't mind, because he liked the boy and, at the end of the day, it could also be that not all Gryffindors necessarily needed to prove their courage straight away – the Herbology teacher, as he always stated himself, was a living example of the fact. But nothing could've prepared him for the Jisung that was now standing beside him, who looked thoroughly unbothered and oddly calm.
As the long tail of the creature was still clearly visible; the two had no problem in continuing to follow it. Despite not having agreed on that earlier, it was almost as though they had promised each other they would not talk: Minho assumed that the circumstances were dangerous enough to have it understood silently that it would be wiser to keep quiet.
As they kept walking, the Slytherin started to hear the same, huffled, almost forked voice, that he had now learnt to match as the snake's: Water, Ssssssecret. Obey.
Whether the creature had been talking all along, and he had just not noticed; or if instead those were the first words the creature had uttered, Minho could not tell.
At last, they came to a stop: it was a solid wall, only dimly lightened by some candles hanging from the corridor's ceiling. But although the space was almost immersed in complete darkness, its many low relieves were hard to miss: they were fluid and continuous lines, that twirled and intertwined to form figures of slender snakes. Right in the very middle, stood a door, of an odd circular shape.
Just when Minho was starting to think of how they were going to get past, – that, or what to do if the snake itself decided it had reached a blind end – the creature confidently surpassed the door, and slithered towards another entry its body had hidden from the boys' sight: it was a giant hole, right in the middle of the wall, that looked as if it had been done recently.
Minho assumed that it had been the creature to create it: in that case, the door must therefore be locked, and – the mere thought caused Minho's whole body to shiver – possibly the creature was not supposed to wander around the castle, but rather to stay locked inside the Chamber. Maybe there was another force controlling it – that whose voice the snake repeatedly said it had to "obey".
What have I got myself into... he and Jisung, by then, had started to crawl as well to get to the hole as soon as possible: right when the last part of the snake's tail had disappeared into the room, the two guys got there.
Minho was about to advance, but something forbade him: looking back, he noticed that Jisung was now gripping to his coat with all his strength, while mouthing him to stop. Executing confusingly, Minho took the time to figure out why the Gryffindor was being so careful.
"Maester, the snake has returned!" the voice was breathy, soft and fearful: hearing it, Minho had a sense of reminiscence, but he couldn't tell where it was coming from.
"Unnoticed, I hope" another voice, more authoritarian and suspicious, answered.
There was a moment of silence. Without even noticing, Minho grabbed Jisung's hand and squeezed it tight. "But-but of course, Maester!" the first voice – that of a woman, the Slytherin was now sure of that – sounded, if possible, even more scared than before.
Is it because she's lying or because she's actually scared? The answer didn't have them waiting for long: "LIAR!" the second voice echoed all throughout the space, – iar iar iar – and was followed by the sound of agitated steps. "I can sense others' presence, in case you had forgotten! Now go and fetch them, and bring them here! What are you waiting for?" he then added, "go!"
Other steps, now more unsure, were nearing.
Minho squeezed Jisung's hand one last time. Sending the Gryffindor a look that he could only hope would be able to tell the ladder to stay still where he was (and not move for any reason), he nimbly finished the climb towards the hole and revealed himself.
