The Beginning

"There! She's over there!"

Their shouting is nearby. Way too near.

"Dammit. No no no." you mutter under your breath as you run through the forest dodging the bullets, too weak to open a portal or teleport. Your eyes can't focus on the ground so you stumble over tree roots as you turn to the people behind. Blindly you throw sharp pellets of dark matter at them to slow them down.

In the back of your mind the fact that you had actually just killed some of them gnaws away but it doesn't stop or shock you. It can't. Because if you let it you'd have died a long time ago.

Hearing shots being fired at you, you bend down even more, making you slow down. A bullet whizzes over your head, putting a smoking mark into a tree right where your head was before.

"Shit!" you hiss as you trip over a stump, sprawling out over dry leaves. The sharp pain in your leg probably isn't good. You push yourself up and see a long gash, blood starting to trickle down. "Well fucking great." you mumble. Hearing more shouts you push yourself up, limping on. "Are they never going to run out of people!" you mentally scream, looking over your shoulder at them. At least they've stopped shooting as you start to run again, ignoring the pain through gritted teeth.

After zigzagging around trees for another fifteen minutes you begin to get enough strength to teleport away. You hear the loud explosion. One that you know too well.
A gun going off.

You turn around to see where Shaw's hired men are when you hear another shot going off.

The bullet seems to appear out of nowhere and you see more than feel as it hits your shoulder in what feels like slow motion. At the same time you see a small gray blur the size of a marble whiz past you. It hits the man who had shot you making him collapse as soon as it went through his throat.

You turn around and watch in amazement as two men come running towards you. They're clean and they look totally out of place in the dirty, misty woods. Definitely unlike you. Last you saw your reflection you were covered in dirt and grime and dry blood all over. All over meaning it's on your shirt, in your hair, and your limbs. In fact you had looked wild. Feral even.

Your vision blurs as your knees give way. You can't make out their faces as they reach you. The men seem to be talking to each other. Or more like shouting at each other. The shorter of the two men catches you in time before you hit the cold damp forest ground.

"My name is Charles Xavier" he says, his voice soothing to the ears,
"and this is my friend Erik Lensherr. We're here, your safe now."

You cling to him like a lifeline. Before you pass out in his arms the last thing you see are the man's eyes. The most beautiful blue you'd ever seen, reminding you of the ocean.

You choke out three words as you stare into them.

"Please. Help me."

"Are you absolutely sure that there is a mutant, in these woods?" Erik asked Charles as they trudged on. The shouts were loud and they were walking as quickly and quietly as possible. "Sure it's not some government fugitive?"

"For the last time Erik, yes, she's here. I can sense her but it's very light." Charles sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "There's people after her too. I can hear them but I can't hear her. It's like she's purposefully blocking me out, like at the submarine with that other telepath except this isn't as strong. The walls aren't as thick. Telepathy isn't her ability that's for sure."

Erik stared at Charles."What do you mean, it isn't her ability. Your saying, she can block you out without having the mutation?"

Charles shrugged. "I really don't know. That's why we had to come here as soon as possible."

"You could have explained something instead of going, 'hey come on! We're going on a trip to recruit a mutant! Let's go!'" Erik snaps sarcastically.

It had been hard for Charles to track down the girl on Cerebro. She was constantly moving, popping up here and there. They had come as soon as he saw she was slowing down. It could be their only chance at talking to her in a long time.

They walked in comfortable silence, Charles furrowing his eyebrows once in a while. Then he would shake his head and send Erik a smile that was more of a grimace.

Erik was just about to suggest going home when they both heard the echo of a gunshot ring through the forest. It was close. Very close.

Charles sensed the girl's presence and took a sharp right. Charles saw out of the corner of his eye Erik draw something from his pocket. He quickly ignored it as he took in the scene. A woman had her back to them and in front of her, a man with his gun pointed at her. He tried to freeze the man but it was too late. The gun went off at the same time Erik let the quarter fly out of his hand, sending it directly into the man's throat.

The girl turned around. Or he had to guess it was the girl. Her hair was all over the place with twigs in it, covering more than half her face. Her leg had a gash in it and her shirt was torn in many places.

"No. "Charles whispered at the fresh blood leaking out on her shirt. "Why the bloody fucking hell did you have to kill the man!" he screamed at Erik.

"What! He shot her!" He shouted back in defense.

As they reached her she began to fall. Charles who was closest to her, quickly put his arms around her. He knelt down on the ground gently, trying not to hurt her.

Erik took a glimpse at her and one look in her eyes and he was lost for words. They were beautiful. The colors moving in a whirl. He couldn't even name all the colors.

While Erik was tongue-tied, Charles quickly gained his composure after having been mesmerized himself for a second.

"My name is Charles Xavier" he said, trying not to get lost in her eyes, "and this is my friend Erik Lensherr. We're here, your safe now."

She grabbed his shirt in a fist, pulling him closer. Her eyes bore into his.

"Please. Help me."

Her head slumped back as her eyes rolled into the back of her head, fainting from either fatigue or blood loss.

Charles almost felt his soul break at the way she had said the words. So much pain and suffering delved in it. He stared at the limp body in his arms for a few more seconds before he turned to Erik.

"She needs medical attention. Now."

Erik mumbled under his breath but Charles heard.

"You don't say."

But he could hear what Erik was thinking.

"You poor thing. What did they do to you?"
