Charles sat on his bed, his back resting against the headboard, a book in his hands. The people of the 'CIA' had provided them with identical rooms. Raven had complained to him that it made the place feel like a mental asylum.
Charles's eyes were looking at the pages but they weren't registering a single word. They stared blankly at the space between the words as his brain replayed the events of the day.
He shut the book and closed his eyes. Whenever he thought of Kate he always felt weird. Not in a bad sense. It was more like warm sunlight and shooting stars type feeling. A fuzziness in his stomach when he thought of her face. Just thinking of her smile or her laugh made him smile.
He thought back and realized that the only times he had been able to hear Kate's thoughts was when she woke up. Both times after a bad memory. When she had almost killed Erik the pain and surprise in her were tremendous.
Then there was the incident when she started crying after he told her everything was alright. The fact that no one had ever said that to her was painful. Even to Charles, who had heard other people's pains since he was young.
He heaved a sigh. No matter how strong she looked, Kate was in fact broken. And he intended to help fix her.
A sudden knock on his door made him jump. Charles had always been able to know when or who someone was coming from their thoughts. But he hadn't heard them making him know who it was. Her thoughts sounded mumbled and muted making it unintelligible, catching some words now and then.
"Come in Kate."
=========
You tossed in your bed. You knew you couldn't sleep. You'd fallen asleep two times in a day and they were exceptions. Normally you wouldn't sleep for days or weeks. And when you did it there was normally a four mile radius from people.
And even if you tried to sleep you couldn't possibly do it after all the hubbub from earlier. Also the room was too quiet for your liking. It reminded you of the silent days under Shaw's eyes.
You got out of the bed and slipped on a bathrobe that was hanging in the closet over your PJs. After having opened the door as quietly as possible you proceeded into the hallway.
The doors leading to rooms housing the other mutants for the night were lined on each side of the walls. Your room was in between Raven's and Angel's.
All but two rooms had the lights in the rooms still on, as a thread of white could be seen at the bottom of the doorframes.
You racked your brains to remember who's rooms they were. You congratulated yourself silently when it came to you. Charles's and Erik's.
You contemplated on who to go to. There was Charles who you had let you cry on his shoulder, or there was Erik whom you had just almost sent to his death by trying to force the blood out of his body.
Shuddering you quickly got the image out of your head before heading to Charles's door. After standing in front of it for a whole minute trying to decide whether or not to knock you finally gathered the courage and rapped your knuckles on the door quietly. Not too loud to wake up everyone but loud enough for him to hear.
"Come on in Kate."
You jumped slightly and then remembering he was psychic you pushed open the door.
The glare of the light by his bed hurt your eyes for a second before you registered the occupant of the room sitting on his bed. There was a open book next to him which he had probably been reading peacefully before you rudely interrupted.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have come." you turned to head out.
"No, wait." He swung his legs off the bed with such vigour that he lost his balance when he got to his feet making him topple onto the floor.
You giggled as you lent him a hand pulling him up.
"Well you've succeeded in making me stay longer than I was going to." you said smiling.
He brushed himself off before running his hand through his hair as if he did it everyday.
"Take a seat." he said gesturing to the bed. You sat down on the near the edge of the bed. The bed dipped down more when he sat down next to you.
"Are you alright?" he asked.
You shrugged. "The room was too quite for me."
He nodded understandingly. "It's almost enough to drive you crazy."
You couldn't help but laugh at his words. "Try it for a month. And the only sound you can hear is your heartbeat and the food platter being pushed through the door. Then when you eventually get to hear sounds again it's mixed with your screams."
The room became even more quite after your comment, if that was even possible. You put your head in your hands.
"Shit." you groaned. You had to mess up a conversation.
Charles merely came closer and put his arm around you. Suddenly you felt safe from everything. Safe and protected. It was as if the whole world and your problems had disappeared. As if everything had suddenly been erased off the surface of the earth.
And all that remained in it was you resting your head on his shoulder in that silent room.

Word count - 931I fell asleep and woke up at three thirty. Still don't know why I suddenly woke up.
I know this doesn't correspond with the film exactly but, heck! I've put in a character does that mean I can't change some events?
Also, who do you think she should have gone to, Erik or Charles?
