Charles stood stunned in the silent room. Collapsing into a chair he began to blush furiously realizing what had happened. His hand went up to his cheek where she had kissed him.

Charles thought of the moment. How Kate had come so near he had even seen silver flecks in her eyes. Her smell was still lingering around him. A sweet, clean, and fresh smell. It was even more intoxicating than the perfumes of the women he met with in bars.

He leaned back in his chair and laughed like a young boy. He felt young. Young, wild, and carefree and whatever the world threw at him he could face.

He got up and picked out a book and sat down in a comfy couch and began to read.

Charles was so enveloped in his own thoughts that he couldn't hear a certain someone else's who had been hiding in the shadows and seen Kate kiss him. His thoughts were full of envy, jealousy, anger, and sadness.

Erik watched Charles read his book for a few seconds before turning away. It was weird. Watching a grown thirty year old man blushing over a twenty year old looking woman.

And Kate had kissed his cheek! And just last night she had slept with him in his room.

'What does this mean? Does she like him?' He thought, waking down the hall. 'It's clear he likes her. Wait, why do I care if Charles likes Kate or if she likes him back? Why am I even still thinking about this?"

He shook his head violently trying to get the thoughts out.

"What in the world are you doing?"  he heard someone say. Turning around, Kate was leaning against a door frame.

"Just getting rid of the voice in my head." he said honestly.

"Ah." she said. "Well, whenever I try to get that stupid voice out of my head I have somewhere that I like to go to." she extended her hand to him. "Come on, I'll take you. We'll be just in time for the sunset."

He took her hand and watched in amazement as a portal shimmered before them. Dragging him along she stepped into it.

Erik gasped at the sight before him. They were on a rock, overlooking the most beautiful forest. The sky was a mixture of orange, red, pink, yellow, purple and blue. Basically the most enchanting sunset he'd ever seen.

Kate sat down cross-legged and gestured for him to sit next to her. He lay down with his legs stretched out leaning on his elbows to look at the setting sun.

"How do you know such a place?" he asked in an awed voice.

She sighed. "Shaw took me when I was five and kept me in an underground bunker for more than ten years. When I finally broke out the first place I came to was here. I don't know how I did it but I think it was because this was the place I needed."

Erik took his eyes off the view and looked at her. The light was perfect and she seemed even ten times more beautiful. Angelic even. Her hair shone from the light, giving her a halo like effect and her eyes were sparkling. It was the most beautiful he had ever seen her. He took a mental picture and stored it away for a rainy day.

"It was the first time I saw the sky in only God knows how long." she continued. "And I just sat here, watching the sun go down and the stars came out that night. I think they're going to come out tonight too." she said looking at the sky.

They watched as the sun inched closer and closer to the horizon. Soon the sky was devoid of the it, leaving behind a memory of colors, that were slowly receding.

"What Shaw did to Darwin wasn't your fault." he stated. Kate looked away from the horizon setting her sights on him instead.

"Charles told you."

"What, no! Well, yes he might've told me but without him telling I would have known."

She took her eyes off him and laid down on the rock stretching her legs out putting her arms behind her head as a cushion.

"I could have stopped him." she whispered. "I could have teleported him out of harms way. I could've made a portal and dropped him in. Either one of them. That orb, that wretched little ball of energy was meant for me. I got Shaw angry and I should have taken it. Instead Darwin got it. He died when I should have."

Erik watched as the last of the bright colors receded into darkness. He lay down flat on the stone and looked up. The stars really had come out. They were shining in the sky like diamonds. Bright, strong, and indestructible.

"Promise me something." he said.

"Depends."

"Never blame yourself for someones death. It's not worth it. Either move on or find someone to blame it on. In this case, Shaw."

"I'm scared of him."

"Don't be. He's just a man, not a god."

They watched the stars in silence, admiring the beauty.

"Shit." Kate blurted. "What time is it?"

Erik bolted up and checked his wrist. No watch. "Fuck. It's longer than we expected to gone for." he said getting up. He gave her his hand to get up.

Kate made a portal back to the mansion but before she stepped through Erik yanked her back.

"Kate." she looked at him expectantly. Her eyes were even more beautiful than a thousand sunsets combined. "Thank you for sharing this with me."

"Thank you for letting me share it with you." she replied before stepping through. Erik took one last glance at the stars, savoring the memory of him and Kate before stepping through.
