"So, how old are you? " you asked Hank.

"I'm 21" he answered, not looking up.

"Okay, aren't you a bit young to be a scientist and poking me with needles? "

He chuckled. " I graduated from Harvard at fifteen and I'm not 'poking' you with needles. I'm just going to take a blood sample."

You nodded, trying to stay calm. Hank didn't know but after what Shaw had put you through you now had a slight fear of needles.

Charles came up to you and reassuringly put his hand on your shoulder.

"Don't worry. Hank knows what he's doing." he said.

You smiled. "Thanks Charles. And stay out of my head." you snapped at him, making him laugh as he backed away.

"What about you Kate, how old are you?" Erik asked you from across the room.

"Don't you know it's rude to ask a woman's age. " you said putting a hand up to your chest, pretending to be shocked causing Charles and Hank to smother their laughter. Erik looked at you seriously.

"No Kate, really, how old are you? "

"Umm, I'm 27."

You felt proud of yourself seeing their reactions. Charles was speechless, Erik seemed frozen and Hank about to pass out. Poor Hank, he probably thought you were about the same ages.

"I have a...mutation that doesn't exactly allow my body to age. In the past four years I think I've aged about six months."

"Wow," Hank whispered under his breath. He came forward with a syringe. You winced at the sight of it.

Suddenly you felt a warm hand slip into yours. You looked up at Erik, he smiled at you. His smile faded as he looked at the syringe.

Then you understood why he'd been across the room. Why he was now holding your hand. He knew. He knew what you were feeling. The memories of being a labrat, on Shaw's operating table.

"Thank you." You told him. He nodded.

You gulped, your grip tightening on his hand as Hank brought out some rubbing alcohol.

Erik's hand squeezed yours gently.

"Talk to me," he said, "talk to me and Charles."

"About what?" you muttered staring at the needle on the table.

"Don't look at it. Look at me." Erik gently moved your face to look at him, forcing you to look in his amazingly grey eyes. "Why not tell us about your mutation. "

You took a deep breath and looked at him and Charles.

"I can teleport and create portals, and I can manipulate blood and electricity. I also have something Shaw called dark-matter.
I think he made it, and then put it in me just as a test subject. As you can see it was a success. With it I can create objects, normally a weapon of choice, like what you saw me do with the knife. But I wouldn't consider it a mutation."

Erik smiled at you. You looked down and saw a plaster on your arm. You gasped. Hank and Charles laughed.

"What about you? What can you guys do? I just know that Charles is a telepath." you asked curious, wondering what Hank's was. Oversized brain?

"I can control metal," Erik said, sitting down next to you as he lifted a tray up into the air. You smiled at him impressed. "and Hank has another pair of hands."

You turned to Hank. "What! Where? How?"

Hank gave you a forced smile as he walked away. "I'm going to put this away. " he said holding up the tube with your blood in it.

Erik sighed. "He doesn't like talking about them. He's ashamed of it.  Mutants should be not ashamed of themselves." you looked at him worriedly, not liking the tone of his voice.

"So," at the sound of his voice your head turned back to Charles. "how come you have so many mutations? Were you born with them?"

You rubbed your neck awkwardly. You'd never really explained it to anyone.

"Shaw experimented on me and changed my genetics to have a new mutation. When ever I come to a near death experience my body picks up the nearest mutant and my body, well, mutates - to that mutation to keep me alive. So basically, I can't die." you concluded.

Charles nodded while Erik seemed to still be wrapping his head around the idea.

"What about an hour ago, when you were shot, did you pick up something? "Charles asked.

You shook your head. "It's only when I'm in a really near death experience. Like somehow my body knows when I'm about to slip into the Grim Reapers arms, that's when my mutation kicks in. When I was born was only able to teleport. I picked up the others along the way. "

"You've had three truly deathly experiences then." Erik stated after a moments silence.

"Yup." you said popping the p. "Not to mention other times when I thought our felt like I was dying."

"Well," Charles sighed, "haven't you had a rough life."

You gave him a tight lipped smile.

"Yes, I have."
