Tuesday came around and I woke up around 7:30. I slipped into some black mom jeans and a band tee I had thrown into my closet, and after putting on a warm jacket, I made my way outside.
Near the entrance of my house was a lanky figure standing. He wore a black hoodie, and tight black jeans, with some converse. After taking one look at the long curly hair, my brain clicked.
"Good morning Matty." I said with a smile, an odd feeling pressing my stomach. He looked back and gave me a sweet smile. I bit the inside of my cheek to hide the big smile that wanted to appear as I saw him smile.
"Morning, Mae. How did you sleep?" We began walking in direction to the school, and I felt my hands getting sweaty as I hid them on the inside of my jacket.
"It was okay, I stayed up practicing Blackbird, but I can't seem to get it just right." I mentioned, almost as if we had been friends our entire lives. This time, the way to school didn't feel like the usual ten minutes, somehow the little giggles and the small facts Matty threw here and there made the way to school shorter.
As we approached the school entrance, I saw Den and Sam, as always, and waved at them as I kept hearing Matty talk about some album he was recommending.
"Oh, you should probably join your friends now." He said as he noticed my little wave at them.
"Yeah, probably should..." I laughed nervously, looking at my group of friends.
He looked at me for a minute and then talked again, "If you want we can meet during the break, y'know, I could help you figure out Blackbird." He said scratching the back of his neck with a certain awkwardness.
I smiled and nodded, "that'd be awesome." He nodded back and walked away towards the school building with a big smile, and I walked towards my little gang of friends, with a sudden heat on my cheeks.
"Well, well, well, will you look at that ladies? It seems like our little Mae has gotten herself a little man friend!" Sam said with a devilish smile and all of the shyness I had felt around Matty was gone as I stretched out my fist to hit Sam on the shoulder.
"Shut up." That was the only thing I could say, and we began to walk into the building. We made our way through the sea of students until we arrived once again to our lockers, and I took out my books for that day.
"Do you have any other classes with him?" Den asked, and I threw her a threatening look.
"I don't know, I didn't really pay attention to him before." I said honestly. I closed my locker and we made our way to Sam's locker.
"Well, hopefully you do, I can tell you dig him." She said, and this time I hit her in the arm.
"I literally have seen him a total of three times." Den shrugged and we kept walking. Sam began telling us about their upcoming date with Josh, and how excited they were to take him to the band's gig because they thought concerts were a super romantic date. I giggled and made my way into my lit class, waving goodbye to my friends, who had some other class. I noticed I shared classes with none other than George, and I smiled at him. He waved at me, almost telling me to come closer, so I approached him.
"Hey Mae, how are you?" He asked, as I set my books in the desk next to his. I smiled and sat.
"I'm good, how about you?"
"Bit tired, I woke up late 'cause Matty didn't wake me up as usual." I looked at him confused, "Oh, well, he usually stops by mine before heading to school, so we walk together, but today he wasn't there, so I slept in." I felt an odd weight fall on my tummy, and some guilt too. George could've gotten to class because of me, because Matty didn't stop at his house. "I don't know why he would do that. He's never missed a day." I looked at him, almost feeling like I owed him an explanation.
"That would be my fault, I think." George looked at me with a confused look. "We walked together today." George nodded, almost like he deep down knew but still wanted me to spill whatever had happened.
"Well, at least now I know why." He said with a smile, and he sat back on his chair, with a satisfied look. I took out my notebook for the class and a pen, and began to take notes as the teacher began to talk. George seemed to be paying attention to, contrary to Matty. Class was over and I waved bye at George as I made my way to the next class.
