The screams were louder in the night when he wanted to sleep. Namjoon tried to pretend just like the staff pretended nothing was out of the ordinary. It killed him. But he knew if he tried to do something, he would break their deal.
They knew he would be able to leave. He was a level one threat.
"It'll only take one word from me," Felix had warned him. "I can have the guards bring them in if you step out of line. I just want you to listen."
They were watching the news that morning, live footage of the post wreckage that happened the night before. It was uncomfortable sitting with him, but he knew Felix wanted him to see what was happening.
It's been a few days since he arrived, and he was sent to his old room straight away. He was given a routine to follow, first on the schedule was breakfast, after that was training and then study. Lunch and repeat, dinner, and then bedtime. It wasn't like he had a choice.
"I'm not mad," Felix had said to him the second night. "I'll leave him alone for now."
He promised.
"Because I have you." He smiled.
Namjoon expected Jimin to walk out of his room. But he never did. He wanted to ask but he doubted they would tell him.
"Don't you understand how much stronger you can become?" Felix asked him while Namjoon was in the rec room studying or the lack thereof. He couldn't believe how Felix wanted him to think this was normal. Namjoon didn't want anything from him.
A nurse asked him to follow him after he had his breakfast this morning. Felix had been waiting for him. They wanted him prepared for tonight.
'Fox' – animal mutation
Deceased
The paper read with a mugshot of the dead girl. Namjoon had wondered if she was actually dead because who was in the lab then? They could pretend all they wanted but Namjoon couldn't bury his anger.
He prayed it wasn't Jimin who screamed at night.
Felix looked clean-shaven and his suit looked new. Namjoon bit his tongue to prevent himself from saying something snarky. He was on thin ice already. Felix finally shut off the television. "Well enough of that," He muttered. If Namjoon was closer, he'd smell the aftershave on him.
Namjoon longed for a hot shower.
The nurse returned.
"What's the point?" Namjoon asked as the nurse wrapped the tourniquet around his arm.
Namjoon sat on the metal chair, his hands gripped the seat. He was breathing hard; the nurse had administered a shot. He thought maybe it would get easier each time, but the pain was quick. Without painkillers or Taehyung to whisper in his ear, he felt it slowly climb up his arms and down to his hands.
He's been stabbed in training. He's broken multiple bones. He could heal from his wounds, but this pain was different. He felt like his arm was on fire like a spider crawled into his chest. He bit the inside of his cheek to stop himself from yelling.
"There's a war coming," Felix said as he sat across from him. "I want to win it."
"Those 'unknown individuals'," Namjoon gasped, his grip denting the chair. The reporter read the news; two unknown individuals wreak havoc in downtown as bystanders panicked to run away. They are unarmed but highly dangerous. They are still at large. "They were here too, weren't they? While we lived here as well."
"Correct," Felix answered him. There was no use lying anymore. Secrets are never meant to be kept hidden.
"We were just children,"
"Each of you volunteered," Felix shot back. "You came to me willingly. You were homeless children, picked up from the street, and given a life."
"If we knew you kidnapped children to experiment on, we would never have accepted this," Namjoon said between his teeth. His lungs felt like they were going to burst.
"And that is why Taehyung needs to be stronger, once the serum is complete, Taehyung can erase all the bad memories," Felix said. Namjoon hated how simple the words came out of his mouth.
"Our memories make us who we are," Namjoon bit back a sob. His heart was pounding in his chest. "You can't take that away from us,"
"No, I make you who you are. You are my children and I will destroy everything that makes you human." Felix stood from where he sat. His expression was hard as he stared back at him. Namjoon felt like he was getting weaker by the moment.
A man walked in with a wheelchair. He bowed politely. "Where am I going?" Namjoon asked as he let the man help him stand up. He groaned in pain; his chest felt like it was being clawed from the inside.
Felix grabbed the paper that he had given Namjoon earlier.
The man escorted him out of the room. They entered another room with a bed in the middle of the room where he was told to lay down. "I know this place," Namjoon whispered. The nurse was already injecting him with something else. "What is that?"
"It'll make you sleep," she answered softly. "You'll want to sleep for this,"
"Felix," Namjoon gasped. "Why did you kill the fox girl?"
He hated how he didn't know her name. She was another person who was supposed to have a life. She had been another experiment - a martyr for them.
"They sacrifice their lives so you can live," Felix said behind the nurse. In his suit, he looked like any other person. He didn't look like the mad man Namjoon knew him to be. "We're going to mutate her powers with yours. With you, we'll be able to move on into Phase Two."
Martyrs were sacrificed. Martyrs are lab rats to be experimented on, it doesn't matter if they live or not. They were the key to build Felix's army.
