A single flower

A single flower can last a lifetime. That is if you care for it properly. Sometimes you find out the hard way. The flower may start to break. Wither and die. But not entirely. If you find that flower before it gives up, you can save it. Take that flower and restore it. Give it a new life. A better one.

Courfeyrac had seen such a flower. He would say it was the most beautiful flower he had ever seen. Slight and delicate. Broken but mending. A flower in need of care. Courfeyrac knew this flower. This flower was his favourite. It had the features of an angel and a voice that could melt the coldest of hearts.

It was on one of these days that Courfeyrac heard the flowers song. A sweet song. One of belief. A religion. Changed to mimick fantasy. So he hid. Listened to the flower sing. Heard the flowers voice and fell in love all over again. The words of this flowers song filling his head with beautiful images.

The lyrics he heard this flower singing were from a song not forgotten but rarely heard. The song of a spaceman coming to earth. This flower knew people would hear and yet he kept singing, singing the song of that spaceman.

"A spaceman came traveling on his ship from afar
'Twas light years of time since his mission did start
And over a village, he halted his craft
And it hung in the sky like a star, just like a star

He followed a light and came down to a shed
Where a mother and child were lying there on a bed
A bright light of silver shone round his head
And he had the face of an angel and they were afraid

Then the stranger spoke, he said, do not fear
I come from a planet a long way from here
And I bring a message for mankind to hear
And suddenly the sweetest music filled the air

And it went la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la
Peace and goodwill to all men and love for the child
La la la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la, oh

This lovely music went trembling through the ground
And many were awakened on hearing that sound
And travelers on the road
The village they found by the light of that ship in the sky
Which shone all around

And just before dawn at the paling of the sky
The stranger returned and said, now I must fly
When two thousand years of your time has gone by
This song will begin once again to a baby's cry

And it went la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la
This song will begin once again to a baby's cry

And it goes la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la la
Peace and goodwill to all men and love for the child

Oh the whole world is waiting, waiting to hear the song again (la la la la la la la la la)
There are thousands standing on the edge of the world (la la la la la la la la la)
And a star is moving somewhere, the time is nearly here (la la la la la la la la la)
This song will begin once again to a baby's cry"

The flower finished this song and closed their eyes. This song that reminded them of fantasies and faith. The song of the spaceman. Courfeyrac smiled. For he knew this flower. A flower, though broken, gave its all to the world.

This flower was beautiful. Slight and delicate. It gave its heart to the world. It's voice and it's soul. Though broken, this flower gave everything. This flower gave everything to one man. One man that was this flowers everything.

Courfeyrac knew this flower. This flower was his. He cared for this flower. When the flower was broken, he helped. Helped the flower become strong. Make a new life. A better one. A single flower can last a lifetime. That is if you care for it properly.

And Courfeyrac cared for this flower. His perfect flower, Jehan Prouvaire...

A/n: the song that Jehan (the flower) is singing is 'a spaceman came travelling' by Chris de Burgh.

Special shout-out to ProdigyOfHistory for helping me to remember this song after I read their amazing book 'Hadestown'
