chapter eight - innocent until proven guilty

emma, ophelia and henry had gone to the shops to stock up on food for the welcome back party that evening. ophelia suggested tacos when she saw the sale on taco shells. that and she'd been craving them for a while, especially since having to eat chimera in the enchanted forest.

"hey! guess what? taco shells were on sale," henry exclaimed as they reentered the apartment.

"apparently, tacos? not a big item in the enchanted—" emma began. she stopped where she was when she noticed david and snow in bed. her eyes widened as she realised they were in fact, naked.

henry, with his age, was blissfully unaware of what they had walked into, "what are you guys still doing in bed? it's the middle of the afternoon."

okay, maybe they needed to give him the talk sometime soon. at least the parts an eleven-year-old should know. ophelia decided that was not her job.

mary margaret paused as she thought over her excuse, "the trip back was tiring, and i needed to rest."

"and i needed to... help her rest," david added.

"uh, let's—let's go make the tacos. we have to make a lot because there's going to be a ton of people at granny's welcome back party tonight," emma told henry. he went to the kitchen.

"we thought you were going to be back later," mary margaret whispered once henry was out of earshot.

"yeah, well, we weren't. so maybe next time, you could put a tie on the door, or send a text, or..." emma trailed off, embarrassed and mortified by the entire situation.

"i'm not doing this," ophelia voiced, disgust evident on her face as she moved to join henry in the kitchen.

emma joined them a few seconds later.

---

that evening, the family entered granny's, trays of tacos in hand. they were greeted with cheers. a couple of people hugged ophelia. something she hated but said nothing about. she didn't like people hugging her without warning and she especially didn't like hugging people she didn't know that well.

the twins found granny, who was holding a few beers for them. she eyed the sign and the way her and emma's names had been tacked on. she rolled her eyes.

"tacos. i cannot tell you the relief of cooking something that i didn't have to kill first," emma greeted.

"don't i know it. meatloaf back home? what a bitch," granny joked.

ophelia chuckled before placing the tacos down on the counter. she listened as david hit something against his glass before making a speech.

"i just wanted to, uh, thank you all for joining us tonight. mary margaret and i, we have a saying. that we will always find each other and while i believe that with all my heart, i'd like you all to raise your glasses and join me when i say, here's to not having to look for a while. to mary margaret, ophelia and emma," he spoke, raising his glass. everyone followed suit.
