chapter eighteen - drowning, literally

ophelia held on tightly to the rope as the ship rocked as it went through the portal. they landed and the water was instantly a lot calmer. she squeezed her eyes closed, trying to will her stomach into not churning as if she was going to throw up every meal she'd had.

"is that it?" ophelia called. her eyes were glued to the island ahead of them. it was not what she expected. actually, she wasn't quite sure what she expected. maybe a cartoon island?

"ay, neverland," hook shouted back.

ophelia didn't listen to what hook had said about staying above deck. of course she didn't.

only a few minutes after he told her to stay above deck, she went below deck to get away from everyone. she grabbed what she could and fashioned a bed. she lay down, emma joining her seconds after, clearly angry and upset. it reminded ophelia of the time she took up running.

oh god.

"i swear to god if you start working out, i will kill you," she grumbled.

emma sighed, sitting on the edge of ophelia's makeshift bed. "they're acting like we're twelve."

"i know."

"they're too optimistic."

"it's disgusting."

"i hate it. i've lost my son and—"

"i hate it too, emma. makes me sick how optimistic and happy they are," she assured. "that could also be the sea sickness."

"gold thinks we'll fail. he left without us."

"gold can go fuck himself. we'll get henry, because we're us and because he's your son," she comforted. "now shut up and lie down." she opened her arms to her sister, who quickly lay next to her, leaning into the hug.

"ophelia—"

"shh, i wanna sleep. so sleep."

"i can't."

"then lie down and let me hug you while i sleep."

emma was quiet after that, closing her eyes. she squeezed her sister tighter until her breathing slowed and evened out. she daren't move, scared to wake her. she recognised ophelia needed sleep and refused to try and stand until her twin basically pushed her off the makeshift bed.

ophelia woke to grunt, blinking as she took in emma doing pull-ups. she groaned. "stop working out you psycho."

emma rolled her eyes, but did as her sister asked.

"don't stop on my account," a voice spoke. hook.

"wouldn't think of it," emma retorted.

ophelia sat up, stretching. hook watched as her shirt rose, revealing her soft stomach. he blinked, glancing away as emma looked at him. "she stopped for me. otherwise i'd throw her in the water for the dolphins."
