Riley's POV
I stand at my locker, taking out the necessary books and binders for my next two classes. I feel a tap on my shoulder and I turn to see Jack Gilinsky.
"Hey," he says.
"Um, hi." Why are you talking to me?
"So I was wondering," he says, leaning up against a locker, "are you going to that party on Saturday?"
I scrunch my eyebrows. "Sam's?"
"Yup. That'd be the one."
"Uhm. . . probably not."
"Aw, c'mon why?"
I close my locker and lock it. "'Cause I don't want to?"
He looks around, as if making sure no one was watching. "I heard Jack's going," he says.
I raise an eyebrow. "Really now?"
"Yeah. Told me last night."
"Oh, yeah, I bet he did." I roll my eyes and turn to walk away, but he grabs hold of my forearm. I turn around. "What?"
He sighs. "Listen. He's only going if you're going, and -- and he has to go."
"Why does he have to go?"
"Because," he says stubbornly.
"Because why? If he doesn't want to go, he shouldn't."
"Listen, I know a lot more about Jack than you do and he needs to go. I don't want his mom worrying about him anymore."
"What do you mean?"
"I gotta go, just please consider going," he says and walks away.
I try calling for him, but he ignores me. I'm left to wonder about what he meant.
