Chapter 20- Dying Ember

That night we hastily found a spot to make camp. Colin and I were exhausted from a day of saving each other and climbing a goddamn mountain! I can't say my life is boring now.

My muscles ached and I lost count of how many times I almost twisted my ankle. We settled down in the first spot we found and sluggish unpacked our sleeping rolls.

Unlike the previous night I saw Colin's outstretched arms in front of him as he mumbled unfamiliar words. I watched in amazement as a turquoise light emitted from his hands and created a thin circle of shield surrounding us.

I hurriedly turned away so as to not look like I was staring and made myself busy trying to start a fire. The night was brisk and it would only get colder as we slept.

I rubbed two rocks together trying to create enough friction to ignite a spark, the wood was too damp around us.

"Here, let me." Colin interrupted suddenly beside me. He whispered underneath his breath and a fire emerged seconds later.

The fire was light and it would be hard to maintain, but sufficient to get us through the night.

"Thanks." I said, giving him a polite smile.

He nodded in acknowledgement and we placed our mats by the fire. We slept closer that night, nearly back to back facing the fire. For once I was not concerned he was planning on killing me, if he was he had ample opportunity earlier that day.

Sleep came easy from the exhaustion and physical toll that came with climbing a mountain all day. Sleep came easy, but the dreams were anything far from peaceful.

It was a blur of all my dreams with transitions so fast it made my head start to spin and I was overcome with the sensation of falling.

First I saw myself as Elle sweeping the ashes of the fireplace. It was jarring to see myself as an outside observer.

Next I was touching the spindle and grabbing the poisoned apple. The image morphed into seeing myself running from a grizzly bear. Then I was training in the woods as Ping, cutting through the air with my sword.

I saw myself clenching my throat and gasping for air underwater. I watched helplessly as the limbs of a tree wrapped around me like vines. I saw myself jumping in fright at the sight of a frog and the beady black eyes of a wolf before it pounced.

I saw long golden locks of hair, longer than I had ever seen on a person tumble around me as I fell from the tower. I saw magic shoot from my hands and used ice to break my fall. I watched as I stood shakily on a rocky boat at sunset and a carpet floating in the air.

The images kept replaying themselves, now jumbled and out of sequence. Soon it became dark and when I thought the nightmare was over, it only amplified.
