Chapter 5- Invasion
I woke up standing upright, jolted awake with my head lolling off to the side. It felt like I was coming out of a daydream rather than a deep sleep. Again, something was off from the moment I woke.
I turned my head to scan my surroundings. No words could describe the shock of finding myself standing in a straight line of men dressed in loose white robes. I quickly face forward, averting my gaze and trying to process what I saw.
There was no way I was surrounded by a line of men for no reason. Curiosity built up in me like a burning itch.
I shifted my gaze once more, taking more time to observe carefully. The men all had dark ebony hair pulled into a sleek bun. The white robes were uniform on all of them, creating a striking front.
My eyes zeroed in on what was in their hands, it couldn't be a sword. I looked down at my hand and saw myself carrying the identical thick wooden staff.
Panic bubbled at my chest. Suddenly I couldn't get enough air in my lungs and was taking frequent shaky breaths. My hands shook with the grip of the staff, and my heartbeat was thumping in my ears.
A nudge jolted me back to reality. "Be quiet!" The person next to me whispered harshly.
I froze, my breath halted and my heartbeat still racing. I concentrated my efforts on standing still and not drawing any attention to myself. I wondered why I did not stick out like a sore thumb as the only woman in a line of men.
Either way, I was not going to make it easy to point this out by freaking out in plain sight. That would be the easiest way for me to be discovered and possibly killed.
A tall man with a stern gaze and dark midnight eyes walked by, inspecting every man. He wore his hair in a similar bun, and wore a leather breastplate and armour with a billowing crimson cape. The sword on his belt jolted against his thigh with each step he took.
He was a man that exuded power and authority.
He made his way to the front, and gave us one last sweeping glance. "I am General Li. We will be training every moment from dawn to dusk. I will push you to your limits and work you to the bone. By the time we complete your training you will be capable of handling 10 men by yourself."
"I look around and I see boys, scared," I could have sworn his eyes were on me, "weak, and incapable of holding their staff properly. Be ready because I will make a man out of you."
"Is that understood?"
"Yes General!" Everyone else said in unison, I had no idea this was expected and hoped no one could see my mouth was shut.
"Step forward. I will be assessing your skills one by one." He reached around to untie his cloak and unsheathed his sword.
