Chapter 17- Preparations

"Where is Esen now?"

Colin cleared his throat and averted my gaze. "I'm not exactly sure."

"You're not sure!" I repeated, every inch of me sent into hyperdrive. "How can you not know!" I exclaimed angrily. This was bad, really bad. Panic morphed into frustration. I knew I couldn't trust him when he still kept secrets from me.

I was right to trust my instincts.

"I never said I knew her current whereabouts. You made that assumption, not me!" He argued defensively.

"You gave me no reason to think otherwise." I shouted in reply, feeling my face growing hotter from rage.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you anyway." Colin remarked, his excuses becoming less convincing. I smirked, he knew I was winning.

"Because I should trust every strange man I meet?" I countered, crossing my arms over my chest.

"Only the ones trying to help you." He said, pushing his chair to the side and standing up. Things were getting heated. Not one to be left behind, I stood up just as quickly and attempted to stare him down.

We stood there glaring at each other, waiting for the other to be the first to break eye contact. I knew it was not going to be me.

As anticipated, he dropped back to his seat and I smiled in victory. "Arguing about this will get us nowhere. You have to realize I'm not trying to hide information from you on purpose. I did not want to alarm you prematurely in case I managed to find her."

"How did you manage to lose her?" How does anyone manage to lose an entire person?

"It's not that simple." I noticed he was being awfully defensive. "We had plans to meet up in a secure location in the forest at noon on the fifth day after your curse was enacted. She never showed up. I waited there every day since with no message or appearance."

"She was supposed to be here when you woke up." Colin said softly, eyes looking downward at the table. He looked like a lost puppy and my heart went out to him. I was all too familiar with the feeling.

Although I did not completely trust him, I did feel sympathy for his situation which so happened to be nearly identical to my own.

I collapsed back into the chair with a sigh. I leaned forward and placed my head in my hands. I wished Esen had been there when I woke up, I would have known her exactly what I learned from my dreams and the harm I could cause with a simple blade.

She would have regretted going after me in the first place. Though now, if Colin was telling the truth and it seemed like he was, I was unable to confront her for what she put me through. I had to play things safe and stay on edge. My time will come.
