People without magic cannot be impacted by raw magic, which is why they cannot feel the magic of a person, but can feel it's effects, which is why magic attacks work on them.
The sun was just setting.
Enid sat cross legged on the floor, staring intently at the tree behind Avery's home.
Her hair now swept passed her waist and she had grown in a willowy, elfin sort of way.
Avery was behind her with a book and a pen, staring at Enid as if waiting for something to happen.
Enid took a deep breath and placed her hand on the tree which immediately shriveled up at her touch.
The more the tree died, the deeper the black aura surrounding her glowed.
With a deep smirk, Avery documented what was happening. It had been 4 years since Enid had started training her magic.
It was nothing like Avery had ever seen.
Enid was able to suck the essence which gave life from living things.
It was difficult training her because Avery did not know the full extent of her powers since there was no documentation of that type of magic. It was a process of trial an error for them.
"See if you can return the essence back to the tree,"
Enid nodded, although she had begun to feel a dizzying buzz in her ears. Her magic apparently took up a lot of energy, especially with higher organisms.
She closed her eyes and imagined returning the life back to the tree.
The glow that surrounded had faded but the tree did not show any signs of blooming.
Just as Avery was about to call out to her, Enid fell to the floor unconscious.
"Again? If you're tired you should just stop." Avery dropped the book and ran up to her.
Just as she touched her, she felt energy surge through her with such an alarming force that it shot her backwards.
"Damn it, the hell was that?" She swore as she carefully touched her hand then hissed in pain.
It was red and raw. The first layer of skin had peeled off.
Avery stared at her cautiously. Although she was no longer glowing, she could still feel an unnatural energy around her.
"I guess we have to wait till she comes home."
...
Rachael walked home in no particular haste.
The books in her hands weighed her down and she suspected that Enid and Avery would still be training, leaving her to her own devices.
She squinted at the sun which still had it's orange brightness even though it was halfway under the horizon.
She had been indoors for a few days so her eyes were still adjusting.
She sighed as she remembered why she had even left the school in the first place.
Hyde caught her in the back room surrounded by the books she was reading.
The books in the room were ones no one wanted to read, for various reasons ranging from their difficulty to their odd subject matter, especially in magic.
Mrs Ingram had always praised her ability to assimilate, especially in magic topics so she found the books in the back room very interesting.
"How long are you going to be here?" He asked. He uncharacteristically wore a pair of pants and a white crisp shirt.
