"So what's this important dinner, Maxon?" I asked said male, grinning up at him.
He simply hummed in response and smiled mischievously. "It's a surprise, darling. You'll just have to wait and see~" he sang.
I giggled and gripped his hand harder. "Everyone's gonna be there, right? At least, that's what you told me," I asked, putting my free hand on my chin in thought.
Maxon nodded. "Mother and Father will be there as well. After all, it's the most important dinner of the Selection."
"Really?" I asked, my eyes widening. "It's the most important? Why? Are you gonna become King or something?"
Maxon laughed in amusement and shook his head. He pulled my hand lightly and led me towards his room. "I'm not becoming King... yet."
He opened the door to his chamber and pulled me in. He made his way towards his desk and opened his drawer. "Anyways, darling, let's go to the gardens, alright?" he asked, pulling something out of the drawer and stuffing it in his pocket.
"Alright," I said, smiling widely.
He walked towards me and placed a loving kiss on my forehead. "You're so beautiful, Y/N."
His blunt compliment made me flustered as I stumbled. "O-Oh, um, thanks, Maxon. You're pretty dashing as well!"
I pointed finger guns at him, and I quickly put them down as the atmosphere in the room became awkward. I cleared my throat and laughed.
"Anyways! Let's go to the garden! Maybe we can see some bushes in the butterflies!" I said.
Maxon raised his eyebrow as I became even more flustered.
"Butterflies in the bushes! That's what I meant, haha..." My voice trailed off as I grabbed Maxon's hand and pulled him out of the room.
As we made our way out of the room and into the hallway, a loud siren echoed through the hall.
I put my hands over my ears as Maxon cursed.
"Come quickly. We have to go to the safe rooms!" he shouted, holding my hand quickly and running off towards the safe rooms.
A few guards ran towards us, and I screamed as they started shooting in our direction.
"They've stolen the uniforms!" Maxon said, running a hand through his hair as he pulled me behind a wall.
I quickly took my heels off and threw them aside as Maxon grabbed a sword and a shield off of a suit of armor beside us. I silently thanked the interior decorator for putting one at every hall.
Maxon held the sword and the shield tightly in his hands and started running towards the Rebels. I could hear clangs of metal, and I was about to run in and help when a gunshot was shot near me and took a chunk off the corner of the hall.
"Nope," I said, "you ain't getting me today."
Two thuds were faintly heard as Maxon came back, and I gasped as I saw a trail of blood trickling down his arm.
"Maxon! Are you alright?" I asked, running towards him.
He nodded. "It's only a graze. It won't kill me," he explained, looking at his wound.
I quickly bent down and tore a strip of my dress. I then wrapped it around his arm and applied pressure onto it. "It might get infected," I mumbled, but he probably didn't hear me due to the sirens.
Maxon quickly pulled my hand again, and we sprinted to the nearest room. "Look, you'll have to hide in here while I go and find the guards, alright? I won't be long," Maxon said.
I frowned. "What? What about you? You might get hurt!" I said.
Maxon quickly opened the door and pushed me in. "I'll be fine. Just stay in here, and I will knock when I get back, alright? Don't forget to lock the door." And with that, he closed the door and ran off, leaving me in the room.
The room itself was more like a closet, and I assumed it was the cleaners' room for it was filled with bleach and cleaning supplies.
I quickly grabbed the sharpest thing in the room, which was a pair of scissors, and ran out despite of Maxon's orders.
I ran through the empty halls, and the sirens turned off. The hallways were silent other than my heavy breathing as I turned each corner, desperate to find Maxon. I headed towards the dining hall because that's probably where he was in search of his parents.
As I neared the double doors, I gasped in fear as I saw Celeste's body on the ground. There was a pool of blood near her head, and she was no longer moving.
Tears of both sadness and fear blurred my vision as I quickly hid behind the doors.
I looked into the dining hall and gasped when I saw many Rebels and guards fighting.
I spotted Maxon quickly, and he was shooting at the guards while hiding behind a fallen table. I frowned as I saw a Rebel creep up behind him, and my legs moved before I could even command them to move.
I kept my eyes on the Rebel as he raised his gun, and I urged my legs to go faster as he crept closer to Maxon.
A battle cry left my throat as I threw my scissors at the man, but he quickly dodged and aimed at me instead.
My eyes widened as I stepped in front of Maxon's unshielded backside, and a lonely gunshot was heard in the hall.
I saw blood on the floor, and I quickly turned to Maxon to see if he was alright.
I tilted my head as he looked at me with wide eyes.
Maxon's gun was raised to shoot at the Rebel, and I realized what had happened.
I looked down and saw my blood-stained dress. My torso was covered in blood as another gunshot was heard. This time from Maxon.
The Rebel dropped to the ground at the same time I did.
I clutched my stomach in agony as I curled up into a ball.
The pain was unbearable. It felt as if I was getting stabbed multiple times with a knife that was coated in needles.
I cried out as Maxon put his jacket on my stomach and applied pressure onto my wound.
How ironic.
Maxon hovered over me and started to say something, but I couldn't hear him.
I closed my eyes after specks of black invaded my vision, and I felt myself getting picked up. I didn't have to see who it was to know it was Maxon.
The last thing I heard was the desperate cries of Maxon.
1108 words! Yay! Sooooo I changed the ending as I mentioned in the last chapter, and yeah! ALSO- THIS IS NOT THE END!!!! Just to make that clear haha. There's one more part left, so that's that! Also, I'm really sorry I haven't updated. Things have been really bad at home... well, they've gotten worse, I suppose, so I haven't been very... happy these days, I guess. Oh well! I hope everyone is safe, and I hope you have a wonderful day!
