I walked elegantly down the grand staircase, and I could hear the music coming from the ballroom. I looked down at the steps as I walked due to my mask restricting my view a little. I smiled as I got closer to the music, and I could hear the violins and smell the chocolate. (Does anyone get the reference?)

I walked slowly down the stairs, my heels clicking with every step I took. My dress flowed around me, and the glitter reflected against the lights the golden chandeliers made.

Soon, the music became louder, and I finally got to the bottom of the stairs, my feet already aching.

Thank you, Lord, for not letting me trip down the stairs, I thought, clasping my hands together as I walked towards the music.

I finally made it to the ballroom, and surprisingly, I was pretty late. All the other girls were already on the dance floor while dancing with guards and their families.

I spotted Maxon talking to Kriss, and for some reason, a pang of jealousy erupted from my chest. I glared at the back of Kriss' head and scoffed, rolling my eyes.

   "Y/N? Is that you?"

I turned around and saw Marlee. My glare softened into a wide smile. "Marlee! Yes, it is me!" I exclaimed, giving a soft, closed-eyed smile. I then opened my eyes and examined her costume, my eyes widening in awe.

"Marlee, your costume is beautiful! You look like an angel!" I said, gently touching her soft, feathery wings.

Marlee giggled. "That's because I am an angel, silly. It's my costume," she stated. "Your costume is magnificent, Y/N! You're a hummingbird, right?"

I nodded enthusiastically and blushed softly as I saw Maxon's eyes on me. "Yeah. I don't really know why I wanted to be a hummingbird; I just got a little inspiration."

Marlee smiled widely and walked around me, feeling my wings and the fabric. "It's so beautiful," she said softly, looking behind me.

She looked like she spotted something, and she smiled even wider and started to blush. "Well, Y/N, it was nice talking to you, but I have to go! Uhh, I want to taste the chocolate!" she said before dashing off to a hallway.

I raised my eyebrow in confusion before shrugging.

   "She was right, you know."

Maxon grabbed my hand and spun me around. "You look beautiful tonight," he said softly. "Not that you don't look beautiful every night!" he quickly added.

I chuckled, and I playfully huffed at him. "Are you finally done talking to Kriss?" I said, my lips forming into a small pout. I took my sweet time admiring his pirate costume, his muscled peeking out from his tight shirt.

Maxon's smile turned into a sly smirk at my words. "Were you jealous, love?" he said, a teasing tone in his voice.

   I smiled at him. "Maybe."

Maxon spun me around and dipped me in his arms. "A little birdie like you isn't supposed to be jealous," he whispered in my ear, sending shivers down my neck.

"I just can't help it, Captain. You're just too irresistible," I whispered back, sucking in a breath as his grip tightened around me.

"I should say the same thing about you, love. Come, I want to show you something," he said, grabbing my hand and dragging me into a hallway.

I stumbled and struggled to catch up with his long strides. "But what about the party? I haven't even eaten any chocolate!" I said, almost tripping.

Maxon noticed my struggling and slowed down enough for me to catch up. "Don't worry, love. I'll send a full tray of chocolates just for you tonight," he said, smiling.

"Is that a promise?" I asked, walking beside him now.

   He nodded.

I stopped abruptly and held out my pinkie at him. "Do you pinkie promise?" I asked, giving him my best puppy dog eyes.

Maxon looked at my outstretched pinkie and smiled gently. "I pinkie promise." He hooked it with his own pinkie and shook it gently.

I giggled and stumbled again as Maxon pulled me towards a flight of stairs.

"Now, come on! I've been dying to show you this!" he exclaimed, running up the stairs while skipping a step.

My heels were killing my feet, and I held on to the rail for dear life as Maxon pulled me with him.

"Maxon!" I huffed, "Can we slow down just a little bit? My feet are killing me," I complained, blowing a strand of hair from my face.

Maxon looked at me before sighing dramatically. "Why are you so slow?" he said playfully. "Is it because of your short legs?" he teased.

I opened my mouth to make a comeback, but we soon came to a door.

Maxon pushed the door open with ease, and his face brightened as he looked back at me. "Close your eyes. It's a surprise," he said.

I smiled and closed my eyes, and I felt Maxon's hands go over my closed eyes. I giggled and felt myself getting pushed into the room.

"No peeking," Maxon sang, and I shook my head.

"I'm not," I said, walking towards the middle of the room from my guessing.

Maxon removed his hands and grabbed my hands instead. "You can open your eyes now," he whispered.

I fluttered my eyes open, and I gasped as I took in the sights. We were in a stargazing room, the glass ceiling showing all the constellations of the stars.

"Wow!" I said, my eyes watering a bit. "It's beautiful, Maxon!" I exclaimed, looking at him.

Maxon smiled and intertwined our fingers. "Do you like it?" he asked innocently, sending a warm feeling to my heart.

I smiled softly and nodded. "I love it, Maxon. I love it so much!"

Maxon's eyes softened, and he started to turn a little red. He reached for my cheek and caressed it softly. "I'm glad you like it," he said, his face inches from mine.

I looked into his chocolate brown eyes lovingly and smiled. "Thank you for bringing me here," I said, leaning into him.

And suddenly, his lips were on mine.

I closed my eyes immediately and kissed back, even though I didn't really know what I was doing. The sensation of Maxon's lips spread throughout my body, sending sparks everywhere. There were fireworks in my mind, and I could feel myself pushing into him.

Is this what they call the sparks? I thought weakly.

I could feel my knees growing weak, and I wrapped my arms around Maxon's neck as he wrapped his around my waist, pulling me closer to him.

I smiled and also pulled him closer, feeling his soft lips sink into mine perfectly.

And that was when I realized I loved him.

   Maxon Shcreave.
