Your POV
I shook my head as I watched the clock tick, and I had the urge to take it off the wall. I ran my hand through my hair and laid down on the bed.
"Are you alright, Miss?" Evelyn asked. "It's already one o' clock, you know. You should go to sleep."
I nodded. "Yeah, I know. But I'm just worried."
I sat up and looked at Evelyn. "Is it alright if I take a little stroll in the castle? I kinda need to get some stuff off my mind," I explained softly, getting my slippers and putting them on.
"Of course, Miss. But don't be out too late," Evelyn said while curtsying.
I smiled at her and opened the door slowly, peeking my head out to see if there were any staff wandering the halls. I then stepped out and walked towards the grand staircase.
"I... really like you."
I turned my head and saw that Kriss's door was wide open, giving access to anyone who walked by. I looked around and slowly tiptoed towards her door, peeking in a little so she wouldn't see me.
"Actually... I love you. I didn't realize that until now. I know the competition's not over yet, and that there are other girls that you might like, but I know I will really regret it if I didn't tell you. I love you, Maxon."
I peeked in a little more and saw Maxon sitting on the other chair. My heart sank when I saw the look in his eyes as he stared at her.
He set his cup on the table and leaned forward to grab her other hand. "Kriss," he said. "You are an amazing person, but I don't think I feel the same about you... yet. Yes, I do like someone else right now, but I think that can change. Just give me a little more time."
I clutched my chest and backed away from the door, accidentally opening it farther. The door creaked a little and caused the two of them to look my way.
"Y/N?" Maxon said hesitantly.
A tear escaped my eye as I turned around and sprinted towards the staircase. I heard footsteps behind me, and I ran faster. I turned a corner and found a storage room which I opened. I went inside and locked the door quietly.
I heard footsteps outside, but they weren't slowing down.
"Y/N!" I could hear Maxon yell down the hallway.
I wiped away my tears and looked at my hands. I shook my head in disbelief. "Stop being a crybaby, Y/N. You shouldn't cry about this," I said to myself softly.
I slowly stood up and opened the door to find Kriss. I looked away as she smiled sweetly at me.
"Look, I'm really sorry about what happened," she said, "but as I said before, I don't regret it. I love Maxon as much as you do, so I also don't feel sorry for you. This is a competition, remember? And what do you do in competitions? You have to fight for the prize."
I frowned at her as she twirled a strand of her hair around her finger. "I know that."
She frowned and sneered at me. "So why are you crying? If that made you cry, then this competition will be a piece of cake."
I looked away and walked past her, hitting her shoulder in the process.
She stumbled back and clutched her shoulder in pain.
I rolled my eyes. "A true queen would never try to put someone down because of how weak they are. A true queen would help that person become stronger. You, Kriss Ambers, are not fit to be a queen," I said, immediately cringing after.
Kriss just clenched her fists.
I smiled the sweetest smile I could and walked back to my room, not bothering to care if anyone saw me in my crying mess.
I opened the door and slammed it shut behind me. I looked up and saw Fawn, Layla, Evelyn... and Maxon. I stopped and looked at him.
"Maxon," I said softly, avoiding his eyes.
Maxon walked towards me, but I stepped back which made him freeze. His face looked hurt, and his shoulders drooped.
"Y/N... You didn't hear the whole conversation, right?" he asked, his voice soft and soothing.
I shot a glare at him. "I actually did hear the whole conversation." I looked at the ground. "I thought you were different."
Maxon also looked at the ground. "Look, Y/N, I didn't mean anything I said-"
"Really? So the whole 'I do like someone else' thing was a lie?" I accused.
Maxon shook his head. "No, that wasn't a lie. I really like you, Y/N. I really do. You know, I think you're overreacting," he said, crossing his arms.
My head snapped towards him. "What did you say?"
He stood up straighter. "I said that you're overreacting. I didn't confirm that I like Kriss, and the competition is still going which means I can like who I want to like! You can't control that!" he said loudly while walking towards me.
I glared at him. "So I was just your little toy, then? Is that what you're saying?"
Maxon shook his head and ran his hand through his hair, messing it up. "No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that I can choose who I like or don't like. You should've known that when you signed up for this competition!" he said.
"The only reason I signed up was that I wanted to save my mom!" I yelled.
Maxon stepped back a little and looked around, embarrassed. "Did you ever think that I haven't ended this competition yet?" He stepped closer so there were only a few inches in between us.
"I will end this competition when I find the right person for me," he said.
My heart sank, and I looked down.
Maxon took a deep breath. "When I find someone I actually like."
I took a step back and clutched my chest as tears ran down my face. Stop crying, stop crying, stop crying!
Maxon suddenly realized what he said and looked at me. "Y/N, I-I didn't mean it, I-"
"Save it."
Maxon stepped towards me, and I glared at him. "Get out," I said, my voice raspy.
"Y/N, I'm sorry-"
"Get. Out." I looked over at Layla. "Please pack my bags. I plan on leaving tonight."
Maxon shook his head and grabbed my wrists. "No, you're not!"
I tried to get out of his grasp. "Yes, I will! You can't stop me!"
"Yes, I can! I get to say who will leave or not, and you are not leaving!" he yelled.
I collapsed onto the floor and held my red wrists. "Please, get out of my sight. I want to be alone right now," I whispered.
Maxon sighed and nodded. "As long as you're here..."
He went outside along with Fawn, Evelyn, and Layla, leaving me alone.
I broke down into sobs as soon as they left, the only sounds in the room.
