Chapter 24.

Kit shot up in confusion as Blink was pulled off from on top of her. She quickly adjusted her clothing. Her mind was still spinning from Blink's warm touch and adrenaline was rushing in her veins.

"What da hell, Blink! She's drunk! What's da mattah wid you'se!" Cowboy screamed as he roughly pushed Blink to the floor. Blink, caught off guard, stumbled to the ground.

Kit got to her feet. She saw Cowboy wind up his arm and she screamed,

"JACK! STOP! NO!" but his fist had already made contact with Blink's face. The sound of the punch felt like thunder striking.

Mush and Bumlets quickly pulled Jack away from Blink crumpled on the floor, preventing him from doing any more damage. They must have trailed in after Cowboy and Kit was glad that more newsies didn't come.

Jack continued to struggle against their binds, muttering nonsense in anger. Bumlets and Mush pulled him as far away as he could be from Blink and Kit.

Kit quickly leaned over Blink who was holding his face in his hands, still crumpled on the ground.

"Are you okay?" she asked, softly cradling his head in her hands.

His cheek was red and already starting to swell, and Kit knew he would be sporting a black eye and bruises tomorrow.

Blink nodded at her with a straight face. She knew he was trying to act tough and indifferent. But that punch had to hurt. Kit held her arms out and helped him up.

"Let me go! Let me go! I'se need tah soak dat sonovabitch." Cowboy yelled as he continued to struggle. Mush and Blink balked from his frantic movements.

Kit stood protectively in front of Blink.

"Cowboy, you need to calm down! Blink didn't do anything wrong!"

Jack shoved out of Mush and Bumlets hold. Kit saw Jack's eyes rake over her as a quick examination from a distance for any injuries or visible harm. After seeing none, Jack seemed to calm down slightly.

Thankfully, he didn't make any moves to hurt Blink, but the look in his eyes screamed bloody murder. The moon above casted shadows across the planes of his face.

"Now, can we'se talk like adults, Jack?" Kit asked, folding her arms and standing her ground between him and Blink.

He nodded, copying her defensive position and folding his arms over his chest. His hard gaze felt like he was trying to shoot a laser past Kit to reach Blink. Kit could see tension rolling through his body.

"Are ya goin' tah behave?" she scolded.

Jack gave her a terse nod.

"Good. Mush, Bumlets. T'anks for da help, but I'se t'ink we'se got it from 'ere." Kit said. She didn't want to have this conversation broadcasted to the whole lodging house. She was already mortified as it is.

"Aw, but I'se wanna see all da action!" Mush complained. Bumlets pushed Mush back down to the bunkroom.

Kit took a deep breath to clear her head and rubbed her temples. Seeing a fight break out when you're hooking up with someone was a sobering experience for her. She glanced behind her to look at Blink to check in and make sure he was still doing ok. He gave her a nod in reassurance.
