Uraraka pressed her lips together in a tight smile as her fingernails painfully dug into her stocking-covered thighs. The wave of jealousy that wrenched her gut was too strong to ignore but for the sake of (Y/n)'s feelings, she choked them down and chose to be the one to dispel the heavy atmosphere in the room.
"W-Wow," she exclaimed, her voice taut. "You guys did a lot of research, huh?"
(Y/n) broke off the eye contact with Midoriya and turned to Uraraka.
"It's not really research," she shook her head, "more like stumbling upon silly theories at two am," she gave a dry laugh. "We were so tired the next morning."
"I remember Mr. Aizawa scolding me for almost falling asleep in class," Midoriya's expression withered, his shoulders slumping. "It was scary."
"Hey," she sent him a light-hearted frown. "It was all your fault you know. You insisted we watch that conspiracy theory on All Might about his Quirk's origin after."
"Eh?" Midoriya whined, eyebrows curving inwards. "But it was interesting."
She rolled her eyes. "I slept halfway through it."
"Oh yeah, I remember," he smiled. "You were snoring so loud."
Gasping with the tips of her ears burning red, she glared at him, affronted. "Was not!"
"Was too," Midoriya chuckled.
"Was not!"
"Was."
"Wasn't!"
"(Y/n) the wood chipper."
"Take that back!"
The corner of Uraraka's mouth twitched and her dispirited eyes glanced at Shouto. The boy wasn't paying attention to the two as he had long ago returned to writing his report.
She sighed inaudibly and turned back to Midoriya and (Y/n). They were still teasing each other and for the second time that day, she became the unwilling audience to the both of them, who, once again, were too carried away to notice that they weren't the only ones in the room.
She couldn't say that she was new to that scene. No. In fact, she could even say that she had grown accustomed to seeing it day in, day out. When it came to Midoriya and (Y/n), it was like they were always in their own little world while others stood by as spectators, looking in, hoping to be included at some point.
Biting the inside of her cheek, Uraraka cast her dejected gaze back on her report to continue writing, while simultaneously trying to block out their cheerful laughter that slowly killed her from the inside.
Things weren't always like that from the beginning, though. When they joined U.A., Midoriya and (Y/n) could hardly be considered friends. They were more like acquaintances who came from the same Junior High and would interact from time to time during a class activity. Back then, (Y/n) wasn't in their friend group. It was just her, Midoriya, and Iida. (Y/n), on the other hand, would often be seen hanging out with anyone she pleased. It was probably an agenda to first acquaint herself with her new classmates in order to find which friend group she'd be more comfortable hanging out with.
At first, she was usually seen around Jirou and Tohru the most but Uraraka couldn't confirm it since she didn't really pay much attention.
Things were going great for the first month in high school, if Uraraka did say so herself. She had joined her dream school, she had made great friends, everything was awesome.
But then one day, it all changed.
(Y/n)'s mother stopped dropping her to and picking her from school and (Y/n) had to start commuting by herself. And since, by coincidence, Midoriya happened to live in her neighborhood, he started accompanying her, thus consequently giving birth to their close friendship.
