Naruto's POV
About a month has passed by since that little episode with Sakura. We haven't talked a lot since then, and we haven't really moved on from that awkward moment. Which made it more surprising that she agreed to come over to my house A lot of other stuff happened this past month too.
Well, for starters, now I work at Starbucks on weekdays. Yeah, sometimes I have to stay up late for homework, but I prefer it that way. Most of the time I work with Rashad, and he's a pretty chill dude. We both love the Lakers, and he also introduced me to American football, which I gotta say, is pretty entertaining once you actually understand what is happening, y'know? His favorite team is the Buffalo Bills, cuz he spent some time in Buffalo, New York before he moved to Japan and he was amazed at the passion of the fans there. He recommended that I should visit there sometime.
On the days that Rashad couldn't be with me, then Fumiko would take his place. She was certainly a handful, as she would always talk about either One Direction, BTS, or cats. And don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against any of those three things, but Fumiko always squeals and talks in a loud voice, which isn't exactly ideal in a place like Starbucks, y'know? But she's also pretty smart, and she helped me with some of my schoolwork, so I'm grateful to her for that.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to work with Hinata again, but we've been keeping in touch lately. She's occasionally on the chat, and we text each other sometimes. And every time I think of her, my breathing becomes faster, as does my heartbeat, and I start blushing. I don't know why it happens, but one thing's for certain- I like people like her. She's just so genuine, and she's really kind, and I can trust her, which I can't say for many girls, y'know?
School has been going fine for me. Hinata encouraged me to take school more seriously, and I've been able to get mostly A's, with the odd A+ and the odd B+. (A/N: For this school, an A is around a 91, with a B+ being an 87 and an A+ being around a 95. An S is a 100.) This was a vast improvement from last year, when I was loitering around with B's and C's. Hopefully, Mom and Dad are proud of me watching from above. But Hinata, Duck Butt, and Shikamaru are on another level. Sasuke is right now our class valedictorian, acing half of his classes, with Shikamaru and Hinata not far behind.
The most fun part about this past month, by far has been the weekly basketball games hosted by Guy-sensei. They have always been eventful, and I've gotten to know everyone better. First off, you have Duck Butt and Kakashi-sensei, who are both well-rounded and amazing shooters. Then you have Guy-sensei and Lee, who are excellent defenders, rebounders, and rimrunners, but lacking skill offensively. There's also Itachi, Duck Butt's brother who works at the police department. He's basically a Sasuke who shoots more. Then there's Kisame, who works at the local aquarium. He always just seems to get stronger as the game wears on, and Nagato, a criminal prosecutor who has great vision but he's a little older than everyone, so he can be athletically challenged sometimes. We've become pretty close after I found out that we're distant relatives, and he's been like an uncle to me ever since. Finally we have Sasori, a puppet-maker, and Deidara, an explosive engineer. They're both skilled offensively, but can't play defense for their life.
Duck Butt and I were easily the two best players, though. I was the most athletic of the bunch, and I could shoot decently too. The matchups were always different each week, but it always ended with me, Sasuke, or Itachi leading in scoring. Unfortunately, we had to stop playing basketball a couple weeks ago because work got a little busy ahead of holiday season. Nagato was a lifesaver though and showed me a youth basketball league in Tokyo called the JJBL (Junior Japanese Basketball League) that starts in 2 weeks, has games most Saturdays, and ends in June. I'm thinking of joining there. I mean, I can't make the NBA without getting some publicity, y'know?
And that takes us back to right now. After school finished for the day, I went home and relaxed. Today I didn't have to go to work because Mitsashi gave me the day off since my birthday tomorrow, y'know? I'm pretty excited, since Pervy Sage is sending me the North American version of NBA 2K15, which is scheduled to come tomorrow. Oh, and by the way, tomorrow, I'm gonna have a party, so I invited Sasuke and Sakura to come help me get my place ready, but they have no idea they're seeing each other. They're gonna come in about an hour, so right now I got some time to relax.
1 hour later
Sakura's POV
As I rang the doorbell to Naruto's room, I wondered how he was gonna treat me. We haven't talked a lot since that "confession". Only a few days after that did I realize what I just tried to do. I cursed myself for trying to use Naruto just so I could get to Sasuke-kun.
The door opened. "Oh hey Sakura!," Naruto greeted me after opening the door. I noticed he didn't use the "chan" suffix, which would symbolize affection. Looks like he actually moved on from me.
"What's up, Naruto?" I tried to sound as casual as possible.
As I went inside, I took a good look at the apartment. It wasn't terribly dirty, but it was a little messy. "Hey Sakura," Naruto said. I looked at him. "I'm gonna have to get some food and stuff for the party, so do ya mind if you can help with cleaning this place up? Oh, and by the way, someone else is coming too, just letting ya know." He then turned and left, rather eagerly. I guess he still remembers.
After he left, I started thinking about that day close to a month ago.
*FLASHBACK*
I was genuinely surprised. I couldn't believe that Naruto, the energetic blonde who would ask me out countless times, was rejecting me. And with that, my plan to get Sasuke-kun was foiled before it even started. After the shock washed over me, I left. I couldn't even look him now.
I took refuge in the bathroom. Once I got there, I made sure no one else was there, then started just bawling my eyes out. I was crying because I couldn't get any closer to Sasuke-kun and how the world was unfair.
Then the door opened. I looked up, and saw the one person I didn't want to see.
"Karin," I said, trying to glare. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to take a shit. What do you think I'm gonna do?" She took a look at my face. "By the way, why've you been crying?"
"I-I haven't been crying, what are y-you talking about?" I stuttered a bit.
"I'd cry too, if my plan to woo someone by hooking up with his best friend failed."
I looked up, shocked. How did she know? "And what makes you say that, redhead bitch?"
"Look, if you're wondering how I know, you weren't really alone in the bathroom a couple hours ago. Your dumbass also decided to repeat everything, so I could record it." Then she went into the stall and I assume she did her business.
When I heard that, I balled up my fists in sheer anger, and I felt like punching her into next week. I had to restrain myself from killing that bitch for messing up my plan. "How dare you, redhead bitch!" I screamed at her. Luckily, no one seemed to hear outside.
Karin got back out of the stall and continued. "Look, maybe I am a redhead bitch, but I would still never let my cousin date a scumbag like you just so you could get closer to his friend. Even I wouldn't think of something as slutty as that." Then she washed her hands and walked away.
*FLASHBACK ENDS*
It was at that moment when I realized what exactly I was doing. I felt so ashamed, and after a while, I apologized to Naruto, since he knew about it. We didn't talk a lot, but we were still alright with each other. Which was why I was kinda surprised that he invited me over.
As I was cleaning, I heard a knock on the door. I assumed that it was the guy that Naruto said was coming. So I stopped what I was doing and went to the door. When I opened the door, I froze. I couldn't believe that Naruto invited him. My cheeks started going pink and I could feel my heart beating faster.
