Steve's POV
I pace up and down the hallway with my hands in my pocket, a million thoughts going through my head about what I could have done differently. How I could have saved her.
"McGarrett?" A voice suddenly says from behind me, making me swivel around on my heels.
A man in his 50s stands in front of me, his face as stoic as a concrete wall and his hands by his side, wearing a very expensive-looking suit. This was definitely the man I was waiting for. I nod my head and extend my arm to shake his hand,
"Senior Special Agent Ryan Anderson?" He nods back at me and accepts my hand, "Nice to meet you,"
"Same here, wish it were under better circumstances," Ryan says with a tight-lipped smile and I return it, a sense of guilt washing over me.
"Yeah, I'm sorry about that. She was under my protection-"
Ryan raises his hand to stop me from speaking, shaking his head, "Listen son, that wasn't your responsibility and I'm sure you've seen over the past week that someone like her didn't need to be protected,"
I chuckled, shaking my head in agreement, "Reminded me of myself when I first joined the navy,"
He then walks over to the set of chairs that were lined up against the wall and sits down. Gesturing his hand to the chair next to him, I walk over and join him,
"I need to ask you if she had anything with her," Ryan says in a hushed tone, not wanting anyone nearby to hear him.
"Like what?" I act confused
"Anything. I understand that you were the last person with her, did she give you anything?" He asks me again, this time his impatience shines through as he practically spits his words out.
I stay silent for a few moments, cautiously watching his body language before I answer him, "She did. But how did you know?"
~
The door shuts and I'm left alone, staring at the wooden floors of my apartment. All of a sudden the phone starts ringing, which I will admit, scared the crap out of me at first. I rush over to the little table that was by the front door and answer it."You should answer the phone straight away,"
"Relax Anderson, it only rang 2 times," I roll my eyes, thankfully he can't see me right now or he would have given me heat for it.
"Anyway, did you find anything useful from the shop?" He asks
"Yeah. My Uncle," I state, wanting to get straight to the point.
"Ahh, so you found out," I know I couldn't see him but I swear to god I could feel the amount of joy he had by withholding this secret.
"I should've known you were setting me up," I shake my head, disappointed in myself that I jumped at the chance to go on an assignment.
"Set up?" He laughs, "No, I thought about this carefully although I did enjoy knowing that you would be in turmoil, having to choose between family and the life you chose,"
I scoff at him, putting my free hand in my pocket as I walk towards the window, "Cut the crap Anderson,"
"Alright alright, Since you were the only person who could get in and out of that house without raising suspicion, I told my friend at the CIA that you were best suited for the job," He starts to spill the beans about the real reason why I was here, " I was going to have you download the contents of his computer anyway but now this is urgent..."
I waited for a view moments, staring at the passing cars below the apartment complex but he never carries on speaking, "Not really sensing the urgency here,"
He lets out a deep, audible breath, "CIA received a tip that he just acquired a nuclear weapon,"
My eyes snap away from the old lady walking her dog, shocked by what I just heard. I turn away from the window and run my fingers through my hair, "And now he's back on the island,"
"What? He's back? Okay listen I'll send a team over they'll be there by the end of the day," He says and I hear him tapping away on his keyboard.
"That's too late, we don't know what his next move is. I'm going to meet him later today and I'll get it," I say to him as I attach my gun holster to the hip of my jeans.
"No," He sighs again, "okay, I know I've been hard on you but this is dangerous,"
"Oh now you care about me," I laugh in disbelief
"...I don't, but whatever it is you're trying to prove to me, now is not the time," he barks down the phone
"Anderson-"
"You can't go there alone! take five-0 with you at least," It almost sounds like he was pleading but knowing the man that Ryan Anderson was, he was commanding.
"Oh yeah, I'm sure my uncle would love to share a glass of Whiskey with them- come on! they'll be shot on sight, plus it's just like you said. I'm perfect for the job," I state, standing up straight after putting on my boots, confidence coursing through me.
"Yasmin-"
"I'll get it done,"
~"You're the reason that she's in there fighting for her life!" I take a step towards him pointing back at the door of her hospital room. Both of us eventually got to our feet when he was explaining that Yasmin's meeting with her uncle was actually intel retrieval.
"I told her to not go solo," Ryan tries to reason with me
"And yet you still did nothing to stop her," I say to him, my voice laced with venom as I maintain the close distance between us.
He laughs and turns around shaking his head.
"You know what I think," He faces me again seemingly interested in what I had to say, "I think you wanted this to happen, First you get her a toy car to drive in-"
"Which she upgraded and cost us more money that we won't get back anymore," He interjects
"Second, you send her here without a gun-"
"Because she didn't need it! she was only supposed to find out what other gangs that Ricki was in contact with, we didn't know he would get his hands on a nuclear weapon!" his voice gets louder and he takes a step closer with each word he says.
"Hey what's going on?" a young man rushes over to us, a women about the same age as him following closely behind.
"He blames me for what happened," Ryan glances at the man that stood next to him.
"Wellll" the woman drags out with the pitch of her voice raised higher.
"Aisha, you know as well as anyone how stubborn she can be," he crosses his arms whilst staring at her.
"There's a way around stubbornness," I cut back in, carrying on the conversation-totally-not-an-argument
"Really, what could I have done," he throws his hands up in exasperation
"You could have contacted me! We could have been waiting-"
"Hey! Will you two shut up!" A voice I never thought I would hear again suddenly shouts from behind me
